BUFFALO, N.Y.—Junior Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills, New York Mills) scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, but the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team fell at Buffalo State 57-49 in SUNYAC action this evening. The loss for the Red Dragons is the first time this year that they have dropped back-to-back games this season as they fall to 15-5 overall and 9-4 in conference play.

The two teams were tied three times during the first half, each time Oneonta taking the lead. The third tie came at 15 apiece with just under six minutes to go in the opening half. A basket by Szkotak broke the tie and five points off the bench by senior Erika Puffer (Unadilla, Unatego) helped Oneonta take a 26-21 lead at the break.

A jumper by senior Mary Kate O'Connell (Altamont, Guilderland) gave Oneonta its largest lead of the game at 36-28 less than seven minutes into the second half. Buffalo State (11-8/6-7) countered with a 13-1 run to take a 41-37 lead at the nine-minute mark. The run was capped by a fast break lay-up by Staci McElroy. McElroy finished with a game high 23 points.

Oneonta got as close as two points the rest of the way as the hosts pulled away in the final five minutes of the game. Buffalo State's final 10 points of the game came from the free throw line.

Junior Madison Slagle (Rome, Rome Catholic) was the only other player to reach double figures for Oneonta tonight with 11 points.

Oneonta plays at Fredonia tomorrow afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m.
