Swimming & diving teams fall in home opener to New Paltz

The Oneonta State men's and women's swimming & diving teams fell today to visiting New Paltz in its home opener of 2011-12.  The women lost 115-90 while the men were edged in the final relay to fall 105-99.  The Red Dragons are now 1-1 on both sides while the New Paltz women raise their season record to 2-1 and the men pick up its first win of the season to move to 1-2.

In the men's meet, Oneonta needed a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay in order to take the win.  The race came down to the final inches with Corey Lomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) touching first for the Hawks just .02 seconds ahead of Alex Miller (Oneonta/Oneonta).  The Hawks also took third place in the relay for the final margin of victory.

Miller set two pool records in winning two individual events for the Oneonta in the meet.  He won both the 400-yard IM and the 200-yard backstroke with times of 4:11.59 and 1:59.46 respectively.  He broke his own record in the IM by 21 seconds while breaking Pete Millspaugh's '08 record in the backstroke by three seconds.

Lomas won both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events to pace the Hawks men.  Lucas Rusinak (Staten Island/St. Peter's Boys) was the other double winner for the Hawks men, winning the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle events.  Rusinak's time in the 1,000 was a pool record.

Freshman Jay Park (Bayside/Bayside) won the 200-yard freestyle for Oneonta while taking second in the 200-yard butterfly.

On the women's side, junior Kristen Magliola (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River) (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River) and freshman Carly Cahill (Troy/Troy) (Troy/Troy) were single event winners for Oneonta.  Magliola won the 200-yard breaststroke while Cahill won the 200 freestyle.  Cahill was also second in the 500 freestyle event.

The New Paltz women had a pair of double-winners in the meet with senior Christine Reith (Penfield/Webster Schroeder) with the 50 and 100 freestyle and sophomore Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) winning the 400 IM and the 500 freestyle.  Both of Reith's swims set new pool records for Oneonta.

Also, for the New Paltz women, the 400-yard medley relay set a new pool record and Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) set a new pool record in the 200 back.

Oneonta's next meet is a week from tomorrow at Hartwick beginning at 1pm.
