Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball powers by Utica 69-58

Madison Slagle scores 23 points in victory

SUNY Oneonta senior Madison Slagle (Rome/Rome Catholic) (Rome/Rome Catholic) scored a game and season high 23 points tonight to lead the Red Dragons to a 69-58 victory over visiting Utica College.  The win for Oneonta was its first of the season as they are now 1-3 overall.  The loss for the Pioneers drops them to 2-2.

Oneonta led by nine points at halftime due in large part to Slagle scoring 16 of her 22 points in the opening 20 minutes.  Slagle hit 7-of-12 shots in the first half including 2-of-5 from behind the arc.

Utica's only run in the game came at the beginning of the second half when they put together a 9-2 run to cut Oneonta's lead to 37-35.  A three-point basket by senior Katie McGee (Philadelphia, PA) capped the run.  McGee, who was the only Utica player in double figures, scored 18 points in the game.

Back-to-back three-point baskets by Slagle and classmate Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills) (New York Mills/New York Mills) fueled a 20-1 door-closing run over the next 10 minutes that put the game out of reach for Utica.  Szkotak finished the contest with 17 points and six rebounds.

The Red Dragons blocked nine shots in the game led by 6'3” freshman Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) (Kingston/Kingston), who had seven.  The seven blocks was the most recorded by a women's player since 2000.

Oneonta will be home again this Friday night when they open SUNYAC play versus Buffalo State beginning at 6pm.
