Women's basketball falls at Geneseo

Red Dragons suffer first SUNYAC loss of season

Box Score Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y.—In a battle between the last two undefeated teams in the SUNYAC, it was host Geneseo that got the edge today with a 71-66 win over SUNY Oneonta. The Red Dragons had three players in double figures led by junior Madison Slagle (Rome, Rome Catholic), who had 16 points.

Today's contest was one of two completely different halves for both teams. Oneonta (12-2/6-1) shot 60 percent in the opening half, but only 36 percent in the second half while Geneseo (10-2/5-0) shot 35 percent in the opening twenty minutes and 57 percent in the final twenty minutes.

Oneonta scored the game's first 10 points thanks to Slagle, who had the hot hand for the Red Dragons in the first half scoring all 16 of her points in leading Oneonta to a 40-30 lead at the break. Slagle was 6-of-7 from the floor including 4-for-4 from long distance.

Geneseo clawed its way back to pull within one point at 13-12 before Oneonta opened up its lead again with a 12-3 run to lead 25-15 just under the midway point in the first half. Sophomores Gabi Regan (Troy, Columbia) and Kate Wilverding (Manalapan, NJ, St. John Vianney) came off the bench to combine for nine points during the run.

Geneseo kept chipping away at Oneonta's lead from the opening whistle of the second half and finally tied the score at 54 apiece at the 10:09 mark. The final tie of the game was at 6:43 on a basket by Geneseo to knot the score at 58-58. Nine unanswered points by the Blue Knights gave them the cushion they needed as they secured the home win.

Senior Rebecca Bucci (Marlboro, Our Lady of Lourdes) scored 10 points and grabbed a team high 10 boards. Junior Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills, New York Mills) added 13 points for Oneonta.

Oneonta will play again this coming Friday night on the road when they travel to New Paltz, who is 5-2 in the SUNYAC after dropping a pair this weekend. The tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
