Baseball Defeats Union College 8-5

Strong outing for sophomore Jeff Carter

Box Score

SUNY Oneonta sophomore #Jeff Carter# struck out five batters in 6-1/3 innings today in helping to lead the Red Dragons to a non conference, 8-5 win against Union College. Carter allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) in picking up his third win of the season.

Oneonta (17-6) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a couple of errors by Union (5-16). Senior #Carmine Caputo (Mahopac/Mahopac)# got things started with an infield hit and then advanced to second on a pass ball before coming around to score on a double to center field by sophomore #Kevin Knack (Ghent /Ichabod Crane)#. Knack was able to go to third on the play after a throwing error by the center fielder. Knack scored the Red Dragons' second run of the inning on a single through the right side by sophomore #Mike Center#.

The lead didn't last long as Union came back in its half of the second inning to tie the score at two apiece. After loading the bases with two outs, freshman Emmanuel Fabre (Bronx/James Monroe) hit a single to center field to drive in classmates Tyler Heck (Clinton/Clinton) and Dom Calistro (Meriden, CT/Francis T. Maloney).

Oneonta scored a single run in the home half of the third before putting four runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning to break the game open. The big hit in the inning came off the bat of senior #Scott Dubben (Roseboom/Cherry Valley Springfield)#, who hit a two-out double to right center to drive in a pair of runs.

Trailing 8-3 entering the top of the ninth, Union added a pair of runs for the final of 8-5. Pinch hitter John Johnson (Smithtown/St. John the Baptist) and Anthony Cassese (Wickliffe, OH/Gilmour Academy) each drove in a run for the Dutchmen.

Oneonta will be in action again tomorrow when they travel to Rochester to take on St. John Fisher in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
