SUNY Oneonta scored 13 unanswered points in the first seven minutes of the second half to break open a three-point game at halftime en route to a 71-47 win tonight in its quarterfinal game of the 2010 SUNYAC tournament. The win for Oneonta (17-9) advances them into the semifinals on Friday night against New Paltz, who defeated Potsdam 67-52 in its tournament opener at home tonight.
This weekend's games will take place at top-seeded Cortland, who hosted and beat Fredonia 69-63 tonight.
Three players reached double figures for Oneonta in the game led by junior
Rebecca Bucci (Marlboro/Our Lady of Lourdes) and sophomore
Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills), who each scored 14 points. Junior
Mary Kate O'Connell (Altamont/Guilderland) added 10 points including eight in the second half.
Senior Sara Chyrstie, who currently leads Div. III assist-to-turnover ratio, had team-high eight assists to go with seven and five rebounds.
Freshman Staci McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) and junior Dee Layne (Brookyn/East NY Family Academy) led the Bengals effort with 10 points each.
Tonight's first half was played as two separate halves as each team took its turn in controlling a block of 10 minutes.
Oneonta had the momentum in the opening 10 minutes of play running out to a 28-11 lead. The Red Dragons used a balanced scoring attack to build its lead.
In the second 10 minutes of the first half it was all Buffalo State as they came all the way back to knot the score at 34 apiece on a three-pointer by McElroy.
A three-point basket by Bucci as time ran out in the opening 20 minutes gave the Red Dragons a 37-34 lead going into the intermission.
