Red Dragons complete 17-5-2 season

Box Score

GENEVA, N.Y.—The #13 SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team had its NCAA run halted today as ninth-ranked William Smith edged them 2-1 in the third round of the NCAA tournament. William Smith improves to 17-2-3, and the Red Dragons wrapped up their season with a 17-5-2 mark.

The Herons will take on Williams in a NCAA Tournament quarterfinal game tomorrow at Cozzens Field at 1 p.m. The Ephs are tied with William Smith to rank ninth in the most recent NSCAA National Rankings. Williams defeated Eastern Connecticut State 2-0 in the other third round game played at Cozzens Field this afternoon.

The game was scoreless until the 38th minute, when Heron junior Jamie Sawyer (Farmington/Unionville, Conn.) fired a shot on goal that was saved by Oneonta's junior keeper Amy Lusby (West Babylon/N. Babylon), but she could not hang on to the ball. Sawyer was there to collect the rebound and put a shot into the back of the net to give William Smith a 1-0 lead.

Junior Chelsea England (Vestal/Apalachin, N.Y.) put the Herons up 2-0 in the 62nd minute. Sophomore Kelsey Hill (Horace Greeley/Chappaqua, N.Y.) sent a crossing pass from the right side of the field to senior BreLynn Nasypany (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.). Nasypany was right in front of the goal and headed a pass over to England who scored her fifth goal of the season.

Oneonta got on the scoreboard in the 83rd minute, when first-year player, Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers), found the back of the net after a pass from senior Nha Wright (Schenectady/Duanesburg). It was Guglielmo's third goal of the season.

The Herons held a 20-12 advantage in shots with 14-6 advantage with shots on the frame. The Herons took six corner kicks, while Oneonta recorded three. Junior Amanda Davis (Roxbury/Landing, N.J.) finished with five saves in goal for William Smith, and Lusby registered 12 saves for the Red Dragons.
