ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team scored two early goals and then cruised the rest of the way en route to a 3-0 win against Roger Williams in the first round of the NCAA Div. III tournament. With the victory, Oneonta (16-4-2) advances into the second round for a third straight year to be played tomorrow at Red Dragon Field beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Red Dragons will play the winner of the Rochester/Western Connecticut State game.
“Things are coming together at the right time of year,” said Oneonta coach
Liz McGrail. “We've fought through injuries to key players throughout the year, which allowed different players to step up and show what they can offer.”
Oneonta wasted no time in putting the Hawks behind the eight ball with a goal in the fourth minute of play. Senior
Nha Wright (Schenectady/Duanesburg) (Schenectady) collected a loose ball that was failed to be cleared out of the box on a throw-in. Wright controlled the loose ball and was able to turn and get a shot off along the ground that found its way to the back of the goal just inside the right post.
“Our team has grown so much this season,” said Wright. “We are peaking at the right time. We have a lot of talent and we've got great chemistry.”
Oneonta's second goal came less than six minutes later off a rebound. Freshman
Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) (Somers) took a shot from outside the box that was blocked by a Roger Williams (16-5-1) defender. Sophomore
Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) (Center Moriches) was there to collect the loose ball and get a shot off before the defense could recover. Brantmeyer's shot went inside the left post to give the Red Dragons a two goal advantage.
“At the end of the day, we had a really great season,” said Roger Williams coach Abi Jackson. “We have this year's success to build off of including a conference championship.”
Oneonta dominated in shots, holding a 17-7 advantage. Brantmeyer had six alone including three that were on goal.
Oneonta's final goal came in the 67th minute when junior
Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) (Clifton Park) was able to dribble from about 35 yards and get herself into the box where she got a shot off that sailed over the goalkeepers head.
Oneonta is making its 12th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and 13th overall. This is the also the third time in the last four years that the Red Dragons have advanced into the second round of the tournament. Tomorrow they will be looking to get past the second round for the first time since 2005 when they were a penalty shootout win away from going to the final four.
“Back in August we set our team goals and one of them was to get past the second round of the NCAA tournament,” said McGrail. “We are looking forward to making it a reality.”
