Rebecca Bucci (Marlboro/Our Lady of Lourdes) scored a season high 19 points this afternoon to lead the Red Dragons to a 65-61 road win against Geneseo. Bucci was one of three players to in double figures today as sophomore
Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills) and senior
Sara Chrystie (Oxford/Oxford) each scored 17 and 11 points respectively.
The win for Oneonta completed a weekend sweep of Brockport and Geneseo in the SUNYAC as the Red Dragons moved to 6-5 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
Szkotak hit a jumper to tie the score at 16 apiece at the 11:04 mark of the first half with an assist from Bucci, who finished the game with a team high seven assists. From that point the Red Dragons seized the
momentum and rode it to a 37-25 lead at the break fueled by a 15-2 run over a five-minute stretch late.
The Red Dragons held a 17-point lead at the 14:17 mark of the second half when Bucci drained a three.
Geneseo began to make it's run scoring 12 unanswered points to cut Oneonta's lead to five points with eight minutes to go in the game.
Oneonta maintained its lead and got it to seven points on a Szkotak lay up with 2:53 remaining to make the score 64-59. Geneseo made its last basket of the game with 1:16 remaining and Chrystie sank a free throw for the final margin of victory.
In last night's win against Brockport, Szkotak eclipsed her collegiate career high set prior to Christmas of 21 points by pouring in 22 points to lead the Red Dragons to an easy 65-44 victory. Slagle was the only other player in double figures for Oneonta as she connected on four three pointers for 12 points.
Oneonta used a 12-0 run midway through the first half to break open a close contest and take a 36-20 lead at halftime. Brockport opened the second half scoring the first eight points, but would get no closer than eight
points the rest of the way.
Bucci added a team high seven assists to go with her eight points in the game for the Red Dragons.
Next up for the Red Dragons is Oswego this Tuesday, Jan. 12 for a road game beginning at 6:00 p.m.
