SUNY Oneonta won its fifth straight game this afternoon easily defeating Buffalo State 57-39. The win for the Red Dragons keeps them atop the SUNYAC standings with a perfect 7-0 record while raising its overall to 9-5.
Oneonta overcame a slow start hitting one of its first nine shots while falling behind 8-2 in the first five minutes of the game. The Red Dragons then begain to settle in and took the lead 14-13 on a pair of free throws by freshman
Sarah Waltersdorf (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) at the 10:20 mark. Waltersdorf finished the contest as the high scorer for Oneonta today with 13 points in 14 minutes off the bench.
Buffalo State then went the next seven minutes without scoring a point while the Red Dragons scored 13 unanswered points to take a commanding 27-13 lead. The Bengals made a small run late in the first half to cut Oneonta's lead back to eight points, but the Red Dragons closed the half with seven straight to take a 34-19 lead at the break.
Oneonta finished the game with 15 assists on its 20 baskets led by junior
Rebecca Bucci (Marlboro/Our Lady of Lourdes), who had six. Bucci also added six boards and seven points in the win.
Freshman Staci McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) led the Bengals today with 15 points and nine rebounds.
The Red Dragons don't play again until next Friday when they host New Paltz for a SUNYAC contest beginning at 6:00 p.m.
