Blue Knights will play Cortland in conference championship tomorrow

Box Score Box Score

The SUNY Geneseo women's soccer team upended top seed and host SUNY Oneonta today, 1-0, in the semifinals of the SUNYAC tournament.  The Blue Knights will advance now to the championship game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. against Cortland, who advanced with a 3-0 win in a shoot out against second seeded Fredonia.  That game will be played on the SUNY Oneonta campus.
Geneseo's goal came in the 80th minute of play when senior Melissa Beale (Penfield/Penfield)  carried the ball past midfield to within 25 yards of the goal before firing a hooking shot that found the inside of the upper left corner of the goal.
Prior to Beale's goal neither team was able to generate many scoring chances throughout the entire game.  The Blue Knights had a semi breakaway in the third minute of the game that Oneonta goalkeeper, Jamie Chyat (Staten Island/Staten Island Academy) came out to stop.
Oneonta's best chance came on a corner kick in the first half where the ball hit the cross bar on the kick sent in by junior Nha Wright (Schenectady/Duanesburg).  They did have another opportunity on a crossing pass in the second half that senior Beth Cherry (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge)  couldn't redirect toward the goal on a header.
Oneonta will now have to wait until Sunday night when the NCAA announces the 2009 Div. III tournament selections to see whether they will receive a Pool C berth.  Oneonta has earned an NCAA tournament berth for 10 consecutive years.
