The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team completed its fall season Tuesday evening with an 8-1 win over a short-handed Union squad. Led by juniors #Will Sacco# and #Jon Dorin#, playing #1 doubles for Oneonta, the Red Dragons jumped out to a narrow 2-1 lead after doubles.
Sacco and Dorin won 8-3, while the tandem of sophomore #Joey Milstein# and freshman #John Rosano (Great River/East Islip)3 won at #3 doubles by an 8-1 score.
The Red Dragon #2 doubles team of junior #John Taft (Queensbury/Glens Falls)# and sophomore #Dan Evans (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills)# fell in a hotly contested match 8-6.
Oneonta rolled through the singles matches, winning all six in straight sets. The closest match came at #1 singles, where senior #Matt Steinhauser (Plainview/JFK)#, this week's NEAC Men's Tennis Student Athlete of the Week, held off Union's Dan Nault by a final score of 7-5, 6-4. Union was missing a few regular starters from their lineup, but still competed at a high level; it was the depth of the Red Dragons that separated the two teams.
Oneonta finishes the fall season with an overall record of 4-2 in dual matches, a 2nd place finish in the Flower City Tournament, and an outstanding showing the ITA Small College Championships.
The Red Dragons will not compete again until Mar. 20 when they will open its spring schedule at Elmira College.
