Coaching Career
Mitch Couch started with the Red Dragons in the fall of 2018 and is entering his 6
th year with the team as Associate Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach. He primarily works with the throwers but helps with Cross Country and any other events that are needed. Before Oneonta, Couch completed an internship at SUNY Cortland as the throws coach.
Success and Coaching Philosophy
During Couch’s coaching career he has Directly Coached one NCAA DIII All American, three NCAA qualifying performances, four SUNYAC (conference) Individual Championships, 18 All-SUNYAC (top three), 10 All-AARTFC (region). Couch coached two school record holders in the shot put, Isabella Fabrizio for indoor and outdoor, with an additional 20 top 5 performances.
Couch is a strong believer in “show me, don’t tell me”. This attitude is reflected in both athletic success and academics with both the men’s and women’s Cross Country and Track & Field teams consistently averaging 3.0 GPA or higher. It also shows in the success and consistency of the events he coaches. In the last six years he has had at least one group on the top 20 nationals list and multiple individuals on the top 50s nationals list.
Athletic Career
He was a member of the SUNY Cortland track & field team as a student athlete in 2016 and 2017. His Cortland athletic highlights included a national runner-up in hammer throw at the NCAA Division III championships in 2017 and a three-time national qualifier. He set both the weight throw and hammer throw records at Cortland.
The Coach
The coaching staff at Oneonta strongly believe “knowledge is power” and using that knowledge to positively impact as many athletes as possible. Couch reflects this idea with the multiple certifications he and the other coaches have gathered. He has taken the following courses through the USTFCCCAF; Hammer Throw Specialist, Throwing Event Specialist, Strength and Conditioning, Meet Management for Track and Field, Sports Psychology for Track and Field, and Sports Science for the Speed and Power Events.
During his free time Couch likes to golf, and play with his dog Lando. As a native of Oneonta, he knows all the best restaurants in town.
