Bethel became the first Oneonta wrestler to capture a New York State title capturing the championship in the heavyweight bracket at the 2018 NYS championships hosted by Cornell.

Bethel began his day with pins over Drew Flynn of Finger Lakes Prep (47 seconds) and Justin Mathew of Farmingdale State (15 seconds).  In the quarterfinals, Bethel pinned Long Island University’s Tim Nagowsky in 19 seconds. Bethel then took a 3-0 decision over Blake Bunce from the Merchant Marine Academy in the semifinals. Bethel took home a first place finish by defeating Ithaca’s Jake O`Brien by a 5-0 decision. Bethel’s performance earned the Red Dragons 26 of their 59.5 points for the day.
