SUNY Oneonta men's soccer assistant coach,
Geoff Moore, has been selected as the recipient of the Glenn "Mooch" Myernick College Assistant Coach of the Year for the Northeast Region from the NSCAA. The award is designed to highlight outstanding assistant coaches at the collegiate level and is awarded to one national winner and four regional winners each year.
Â
The award is named in honor of the former Hartwick College All-American who died suddenly in 2006. Myernick won the 1976 Hermann Trophy as that year's outstanding collegiate player. He then spent eight seasons in the North American Soccer League and one in Major Indoor Soccer League. He also earned 10 caps with the U.S. national team. After retiring from playing professionally, Myernick spent over twenty years as a professional and national team coach.
Â
"Geoff's commitment to our program is unquestioned," stated head coach
Iain Byrne, who nominated Moore for the honor. "He goes above and beyond his duties, and he is always the first to volunteer for any additional responsibilities. His ability to scout, recruit, and develop our players has played a key role in building our nationally ranked program."
Â
Moore just completed his fifth season at Oneonta, where his recruiting skills have helped to build the Red Dragons into a nationally recognized program. He is equally adept at coaching the goalkeepers, working on team tactics with the field players, or mentoring the younger student-athletes as they adapt to college life.
Â
Prior to Oneonta, Moore served as the goalkeeper coach for one season at SUNY Delhi before taking over as head coach from 2004-2008. During that span he compiled a career record of 36-25-6, and ended the 2008 season with the 11th ranked team in the country courtesy of a 14-3-1 record.
Â
In addition to achieving the best record in the program's history, Moore's four years at Delhi produced two NJCAA All-Americans, five NJCAA All-Region players, while he was twice voted Conference "Coach of the Year".
Â
Moore has served as the Director of Coaching for the Oneonta Soccer Club, as well as a stint as the head coach of Mohawk United of the NPSL. In 2007, he received his NSCAA National coaching diploma.
Â
Moore was born and raised in Oneonta, and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1996 where he earned two Daily Star first team nominations as a goalkeeper. He also represented the WNY ODP team.
Â
Moore earned an Associate's Degree in General Studies from SUNY Delhi and currently resides in Oneonta with his two children.
