Baseball (14-14/7-5)
April 15th vs. Keystone College, L 0-2
The Oneonta State baseball team ran into a strong arm last Sunday in falling at home to Keystone College 2-0. The Giants' pitcher struck out 12 Red Dragons en route to a complete game, four-hit shutout.
The game was a pitcher's duel through the first six innings. Oneonta starter
Chris Tyson (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) threw the first five innings and surrendered only a pair of hits while striking out three batters. It wasn't until the seventh inning when Keystone made the Red Dragons pay for a throwing error that led to an unearned run and a 1-0 lead.
A Giant reached on the throwing error to start the seventh. The runner was then sacrificed to second before coming around to score on a single to center field.
The Giants added its second run of the game in the eighth inning.
Freshman
Steve Ascher (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) was the tough luck loser for Oneonta. He entered the game at the beginning of the sixth inning and threw the final four innings. He allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out two batters.
April 17th vs. Plattsburgh, L 4-6; W 5-1
Freshman pitcher
Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) threw a complete game, five-hitter to lead the Oneonta State baseball team to a 5-1 victory in game 2 of a SUNYAC doubleheader last Tuesday versus Plattsburgh. The win for the Red Dragons earned them a split for the day after they dropped game 1, 6-4.
Oneonta carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning before breaking the game open with three runs in the inning. The big hit in the inning was a one-out, bases loaded single by junior
Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) that plated a pair of runs. The final run of the inning came in on a sacrifice fly to right field by junior
Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) that drove in senior
Tory Bouyea (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh), who reached on an error to load the bases before Massaroni's at-bat.
Mastrianni struck out two batters and allowed the only run in the second inning en route to winning his second game of the season.
Senior
Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane) was 3-for-4 in the game with an RBI and two runs scored. Knack scored Oneonta's first run in the first inning after doubling to right center field to start the bottom of the inning. Knack was moved to third by senior
Ivan Plata (Schenectady/Guilderland) before scoring on a Bouyea ground out to second base.
In the first game, Plattsburgh scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to open up a 5-1 lead.
In the seventh inning, Oneonta got an RBI double by Knack that drove in
Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia) from first base to cut the Cardinals lead to 6-3. With two outs, Bouyea drove in Knack for the second run of the inning. Doughtie walked the next batter and then hit pinch-hitter
Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) to load the bases.
Softball (9-17/3-7)
April 13th vs. Fredonia, W 8-5; L 2-6
The SUNY Oneonta softball team got some timely hitting in their half of the fifth inning to take the first game of the doubleheader series versus Fredonia last Friday by the score of 8-5. Freshman
Shannon McQueeney (Dix Hills/Commack) was the games hero as she hit a triple to clear the bases for the Red Dragons.
Fredonia scored in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to left field. Oneonta came right back in the bottom half to take the lead. Senior
Kalyn Deso(Schenectady/South Colonie) started things off for the Red Dragons when she singled and then stole second. Freshman
Nicole Brieva (Kings Park/Kings Park) walked to put runners on first and second base. Classmate
Laura Campbell (Cold Spring/Haldane) came to the plate with two outs and roped a single to left field, scoring Deso and moving Brieva to third, who later scored on an error by the catcher. Sophomore
Tricia Kendziera (Poughquag/Arlington) doubled to score Campbell for the teams third run of the inning.
The Blue Devils came back and tied the game up in the top of the fourth when they scored three runs of their own.
Oneonta rallied and scored four runs in the fifth to take the lead for good.
Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore),
Stephanie Gaska (Harpursville/Harpursville) and Deso each hit singles to open the inning. McQueeney stepped up to the plate and laced a shot to deep right center field, clearing the base paths and stopping on third with a triple. McQueeney scored two batters later when Brieva hit a single up the middle.
Fredonia put one more run on the board in the top of the seventh inning, but winning pitcher Gaska shut the door on them by getting a pop out and ground out to end the inning. Gaska earned her first win of the season.
Kendziera, Marzillo and Deso each had two hits for the Red Dragons in game 1 and McQueeney provided three runs batted in.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Fredonia took the lead in the top of the third inning.
Oneonta tied the game in the fifth inning at 2-2. Freshman
Gemma Mahoney (Pearl River/Pearl River) laid down a beautiful bunt that rested on third base line. Campbell reached on a throwing error by the catcher after laying down a sacrifice bunt that moved Mahoney to third. Mahoney scored the Red Dragons first run on a passed ball as she slid under the catchers tag.
Chandler Campbell (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) singled up the middle of the field, scoring Laura.
Fredonia was not done scoring. In the top of the sixth they were able to plate the game-winning run with three singles hit up the middle of the field.
C. Campbell finished the second game going three-for-three with a run batted in.
April 14th vs. Buffalo State, L 3-4; L 7-8
The SUNY Oneonta softball team dropped both games of the doubleheader last Saturday to visiting SUNYAC foe Buffalo State. They lost the first game 4-3, and then the second game 8-7.
Oneonta outhit Buffalo State (15-11/8-4 SUNYAC) in both games of the twinbill, 11-10 and 12-10 respectively. In game 2 of the doubleheader, the Red Dragons went down 3-0 after the top of the second inning and rallied back when they plated two runs in their half. Sophomore
Gaska reached on a throwing error to start the inning off. With two outs, freshman
Brieva walked and classmate
Mahoney reached base thanks in part to a fielding error by the Bengals pitcher.
Kendziera singled in the first two runs for Oneonta to put them down by a run, 3-2.
The Bengals answered back in the third and fourth innings with single runs before plating three in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead.
Oneonta was not done, as the comeback mounted. In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Katie O'Flynn (Pearl River/Pearl River) singled to left field followed by a walk to McQueeney. Brieva then singled up the middle to drive in O'Flynn and McQueeney. The Red Dragons worked the score back to 8-5 after scoring another run in the sixth inning.
With two outs in the seventh, Kendziera started the rally off with a single to left field.
C. Campbell doubled to score Kendziera.
Marzillo stepped up to the plate and hit a shot down the left field line, bringing home Campbell. The valiant comeback fell short as Bengals ace pitcher was able to strike out the next batter to end the game.
Kendziera, Campbell, and Marzillo each had multiple hits. Brieva added two runs batted in.
In game 1, the Red Dragons took a 3-0 lead into the final inning when the Bengals came charging back to score four runs to take the win 4-3.
Oneonta scored the game’s first two runs in the second inning. McQueeney started it off with a walk and
Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) followed with a single through the left side.
Laura Loudis (Loundonville/Colonie Central) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move McQueeney and Rivera up a base. Brieva stepped in and roped a double to center field, plating the two base runners.
The Red Dragons added a run to their lead in the fifth when Marzillo led off with a double to left center field. Senior
Deso hit her in to give Oneonta a 3-0 lead.
Rivera went 3-for-4 in game 1.
April 17th vs. Ithaca, L 4-7; W 7-0
The SUNY Oneonta softball team got a solid pitching performance from freshman
O’Flynn in game 2 of a doubleheader split with Ithaca College last Tuesday. O'Flynn allowed five hits in the complete game shutout of the Bombers to earn her third win of the season as the Red Dragons won 7-0.
It was a heavily contested battle as the score remained deadlocked at zeros going into the sixth inning. The two teams had runners in scoring positions, but could not find that one last hit to put the first run across the plate. Both teams left seven runners on base in the second game.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Oneonta struck, thanks in part to three errors by the Ithaca defense. The first two batters,
Deso and
RIvera, got aboard due to a fielding and throwing error. After Ithaca changed pitchers, the bats came alive.
C. Campbell got it started with a single down the left field line to put Oneonta's first run on the board.
Loudis followed suit with an infield hit that scored Rivera. Freshman
McQueeney laid down a bunt single that advanced the runners to fill the base paths. O'Flynn then stepped to the plate and helped her own cause as she doubled down the right field line, putting two more runs on the board. For the second time in the inning, Deso reached on a fielding error that cleared the bases and found her at third.
With the score at 7-0, O'Flynn was able to record the final three outs for the win. She got the furst batter to pop up to McQueeney in right field. The next two got on board with a double and walk. O'Flynn didn't falter as she struck out the next batter and got the final out to pop up to
Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) in center field.
Freshman
L. Campbell had three hits in game 2, including a bunt single.
C. Campbell gave the Red Dragons a pair of hits and O'Flynn had two run batted in.
In game 1, Ithaca struck in the third, fifth and sixth innings.
Oneonta fought back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Loudis singled through the left side and Brieva followed suit with a single down the right field line. L. Campbell stepped to the plate and hit a shot for a single through the right side that scored Loudis. The fourth single of the inning by
Kendziera, produced the second and third runs of the inning when the center fielder bobbled the ball.
The Bombers added two more runs to their total in the fifth on four singles and led 6-3.
Once again the Red Dragons battled back as they plated one in the fifth. L. Campbell hit the ball on the ground and beat the throw to first by the shortstop. After stealing second, Campbell advanced to third on a Kendziera ground out and scored on
Marzillo's double to left center.
Ithaca shut the door on Oneonta when they added a single run in the sixth to increase their lead to 7-4.
The Red Dragons got a pair of hits from Loudis and L. Campbell. Campbell also added a pair of steals in game 1.
Men’s Lacrosse (3-9/1-3)
April 14th at Potsdam, W 14-11
The Oneonta State men's lacrosse team snapped its six-game losing streak last Saturday with its 14-11 road win versus SUNY Potsdam.
Oneonta fell behind 4-0 before battling back to pull within 5-3 by the end of the opening quarter. Sophomore
Daniel Stern (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) scored two of his team high four goals in the first period of play. Stern finished the contest with six points as he also added a pair of assists.
The two teams played even in the second quarter and a goal by Stern with just over one minute to play in the period, brought Oneonta back to within a pair of goals at 8-6 entering halftime.
A pair of goals in the early going of period three by Potsdam gave them a four-goal advantage at 10-6.
Oneonta stormed back and seized the momentum of the game outscoring the Bears 5-1 over the final 10 minutes to tie the score at 11-11 entering the final period.
Solid defense and goalkeeping along with timely scoring allowed the Red Dragons to put three goals on the scoreboard in the fourth period. Stern had a goal and an assist while senior
Blair Hanson (Fayetteville/Fayetteville Manlius) and junior
John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks) each tallied a goal for Oneonta.
Senior
Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) made 13 saves today to pick up the win in goal. Junior
Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) won 21-of-28 face offs while collecting 13 ground balls.
April 18th vs. Geneseo, L 9-13
The Oneonta State men's lacrosse team made a late run, but fell short today to visiting SUNY Geneseo 13-9 in SUNYAC men's action. Sophomore
Stern and junior
van de Veerdonk had three points each to lead the offense.
Geneseo got things started quickly, scoring just eight seconds into the contest. Freshman Steve Cregan scored the first of his team high four goals off an assist from junior Frank DiSanti.
Shane Kelly (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) tied the score four minutes later unassisted. The two teams then exchanged a pair of goals at a repaid rate with Stern scoring to end the pace and tie the game at 3-3. Geneseo scored a pair to take a 5-3 lead heading into the second period.
Both teams scored two goals each in the second period
Geneseo stretched its lead during the third period, outscoring Oneonta 6-1 to gain a 13-6 lead at the end of the period.
Oneonta scored three unanswered goals to start the fourth period to cut Geneseo's lead to 13-9.
Alex Haffner (Northport/Northport), van de Veerdonk and
Anthony Laureano (Holtsville/Sachem East) each registered a goal. Unfortunately that would be it for the Red Dragons in the game as Geneseo held Oneonta scoreless over the remaining seven minutes of the game to take the win.
Women’s Lacrosse (10-2/3-2)
April 14th at Geneseo, L 9-15
The Oneonta State women's lacrosse team fell on the road last Saturday at SUNY Geneseo 15-9. Freshman
Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East) led Oneonta with three goals and two assists as the Red Dragons are now 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the SUNYAC. The win for the Blue Knights raises its overall record to 6-4 and 2-2 in conference play.
Oneonta scored a pair of goals in the first minute of the game to jump out quickly. Senior
Rebecca Monteith (West Islip/West Islip) scored on a free position shot just 13 seconds into the contest. She was followed 34 seconds later by freshman
Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport), who scored with an assist from Donodeo.
Geneseo countered with three unanswered goals to grab its first lead of the game before junior
Caroline Tulley (Malverne/Sacred Heart Academy) tied the score on a free position shot at the 5:49 mark.
Once again, the Blue Knights ran off three straight goals before Monteith and Donodeo cut the lead back to one goal at 6-5 with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half.
Geneseo scored a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the half to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
Back-to-back goals to start the second half by Donodeo and senior
Heidi Kissinger (East Islip/East Islip) brought Oneonta to within one goal again at 8-7. Unfortunately that would be as close as the Red Dragons would get as Geneseo scored the next seven goals to put the game out of reach.
April 18th at Scranton, W 17-10
The Oneonta State women's lacrosse team picked up a 17-10 road win last Tuesday night at Scranton.
After Scranton scored the opening goal of the game just 50 seconds in, Oneonta bounced back with a pair of goals, both scored by junior
Tulley. Tulley would finish the game with six goals and one assist to lead the Red Dragons.
After an unassisted goal by Emily Goss at the 17:22 mark tied the game at five apiece, Oneonta closed the first half with four unanswered goals to take a comfortable 9-5 lead into halftime. Tulley,
Chelsea Collins (St. James/Smithtown East) and
Donodeo each had a goal and an assist for Oneonta.
Tulley got things going in the second half, giving Oneonta its largest lead at 10-5. Scranton got as close as four goals at 14-10 before the Red Dragons shut the door, scoring the final three goals of the game for the final margin of victory.
Donodeo finished the game with three goals and three assists while senior
Monteith added three goals and two assists.
Senior
Annelise Muscietta (Lindenhurst/Walter O'Connell Copiague) made nine saves in picking up her 10th win of the season.
Men’s Track & Field
April 14th at Vassar Invite, 2nd place with 186.5 points
April 14th at Bucknell, non-scoring
The Oneonta State men's track & field teams took Vassar College by placing second on the men's side. The men scored 186.5 points, 20 points behind team champion Rensselaer.
The Red Dragons also sent six athletes to compete at Bucknell. The highlight of that non-scoring meet was a new school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by junior
Chris Harvey (Kings Park/Kings Park). Harvey ran a time of 9:26.52 to set a new record.
The men had five different individuals win events in the meet plus one relay.
Oneonta's first event winner on the day was junior
Ben Reynolds (Endicott/Maine-Endwell), who won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:01.00.
The Red Dragons had four hurdlers place in the top-7 in the meet led by freshman
Rob Farrell (Carmel/Mahopac), who took first place in a time of 15.89. Farrell was also the third leg of the 4x100-meter relay that came in first with an ECAC qualifying time of 42.99.
Junior
Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) took first place in the 400 meters in an ECAC qualifying time of 49.65. He also ran a leg on the 4x100 relay.
The other two legs of the relay were freshman
Brandon Lee (West Babylon/West Babylon) and senior
Jesse Dobson (Farmingville/Sachem East). Lee also placed eighth in the 100-meter dash and Dobson was second in the 400.
Senior
Sean Wren (Delanson/Duanesburg) won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.13. He also was seventh in the 100 in a time of 11.58.
Junior
Dustin Cox (Pulaski/Pulaski) cleared a personal best height in the high jump at 6'-4”. The height also reached the ECAC qualifying mark in the event. Cox was also ninth in the long jump and third in the 110 high hurdles.
The throwers had another solid shoeing for the Red Dragons this week. Junior
Ian Kelley (Oneonta/Oneonta) set a school record in finishing second in the discus. His distance of 139'-9” broke the old mark by four feet. Kelley also a personal best throw in the hammer of 136'-6”, which placed him fifth.
Freshman
J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) won the hammer event with a throw of 149'-5”. He was also third in the shot put with a distance of 42'-11”.

Women’s Track & Field
April 14th at Vassar Invite, 1st place with 178 points

The Oneonta State women's track & field teams took Vassar College by storm yesterday winning the women's meet. The women amassed 178 points.
Senior
Sarah Timmons (Schodack/Maple Hill) was the standout performer again on the women's side, winning three individual events while setting another school record. Timmons won the shot put, javelin and discus while coming in second place in the hammer throw. She broke her own school record in the javelin by six feet as she recorded a distance of 119'-4”. On the day, she scored 34 points in the meet while reaching the ECAC qualifying standards in both the discus and hammer.
Other event winners for the Red Dragons were freshman
Kenya Outram (Brooklyn/Victory Collegiate) and sophomores
Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip/West Islip) and
Carolyn Nasr (LaGrangeville/Arlington). Outram won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.76. Brandt won the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.16. She also finished second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.32. Nasr won the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:02.35.
The final highlight of the meet for the women was a new school record in the 4x800-meter relay. The foursome of Nasr, junior
Allie DiMura (Albany/Guilderland) and freshmen
Nicole Lucia Moneta (Franklin Square/Valley Stream North) and
Mariel Doyle (Delmar/Bethlehem) crossed the line in 10:10.60, breaking the old record by just under two seconds. The time was also good enough to qualify for the ECAC meet in May.
Men’s Tennis
April 13th vs. RIT, L 3-6
The Oneonta State men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 dual match at home last Friday afternoon versus visiting RIT 6-3.
Oneonta trailed the match coming out of doubles 2-1. The Red Dragons earned its point at third doubles as the senior duo of
Joey Milstein (Slingerlands/Guilderland) and
Adam Slifkin (Flushing/Nordhoff (CA)) came back from a service break down to defeat Jake Stocker and Frank McGinn 8-6.
In singles, Oneonta scored only two points with wins at first and fifth singles.
Joshua Slifkin (Flushing/Nordhoff (CA)) battled through some cramping to win in a third set, super tie break, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 to earn the victory at fifth singles.
Freshman
David Goldberg (Scarsdale/Scarsdale) won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to take the points at first singles over Clayton Tontarski.
April 18th vs. Rensselaer, W 5-4
Freshman
Goldberg won a super tiebreak set 10-8 at first singles to clinch a 5-4 win for the Oneonta State men's tennis team last Wednesday against Rensselaer. The two teams went to the edge of darkness before the Red Dragons finally pulled out the match.
Seniors J. Slifkin and
Adam Shapiro (East Rockaway/Lynbrook) won 8-3 at second doubles for Oneonta versus seniors Kyle Borton and Patrick Russo.
In addition to Goldberg, Milstein, and both Slifkins were victorious. Milstein won at fourth singles in a third set tiebreak (6-1, 2-6, 7-6(5)). J. Slifkin won in straight sets at fifth singles while his brother, Adam, won in three sets (4-6, 6-0, 6-4).
