Baseball (13-12/6-4)

Apr. 6th at New Paltz, W 11-7
The Oneonta State baseball team went on the road last Friday and picked up an 11-7 win against New Paltz in the first of a three-game SUNYAC series.  New Paltz rallied with four runs in the ninth inning and had the tying run at the plate, but came up short.

Hitters five through nine in the Oneonta order combined for 10 of the team's 15 hits while scoring eight of the 11 runs in the game.  The No. 9 hitter, Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia), had three hits and scored a pair of runs.  Matching his three-hit performance was senior Ivan Plata (Schenectady/Guilderland), who added two runs batted in.

Senior Chris Tyson (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) went eight innings on the day, allowing three earned runs and 10 hits in running his record to 3-1 on the season.

Oneonta scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by senior Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens).

New Paltz came back in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to take its only lead of the game.

Oneonta took back the lead in the top of the third on a two-run home run by Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island), his first of the season. The Red Dragons stretched its winning margin to a 9-2 score by the end of the seventh inning.  Oneonta took advantage of a throwing error in a three-run sixth inning that scored a pair of runs while junior Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) hit an RBI single to account for the final run of the inning.

With only three outs remaining, New Paltz staged a comeback. The Hawks scored five runs and had the tying run at the plate when they were unlucky and lined into an unassisted double play to the second baseman to end the game.

Apr. 7th at New Paltz, L, 7-11 (7 innings); W 4-2 (11 innings)
The Oneonta State baseball team completed its SUNYAC three-game series last Saturday at New Paltz by splitting its doubleheader with the Hawks.  Both games had some heroics as game 1 went 11 innings and game 2 was won with a walk-off grand slam.  Oneonta won the first game, 4-2 while New Paltz won game 2, 11-7.

Earlier in the day, in game one, New Paltz took the lead on a solo homerun, but Oneonta battled back in the top of the seven inning and tied the game on a Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane) two-run home run that scored both himself and Plata, who singled to start the inning. After multiple scoreless innings and a Hawk pitching change, Oneonta was able to plate two runs in the top of the 11th inning off a balk and a wild pitch to go up by the eventual final score of 4-2.

Monaco was charged with the loss in two innings of relief, although the senior did strike out four of the ten batters he faced. Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush) won game one for Oneonta with six innings of relief after spelling Oneonta starter Steve Ascher (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck).  Hegmann allowed only one unearned run in his stint while striking out three hitters.

Ascher allowed five hits and one run while striking out six batters in another solid outing for the freshman left-handed hurler.

Oneonta had only four hits in game 1 and Knack's RBI's were the only ones recorded in the opener.

In game 2 today, Oneonta held a 7-2 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning before the Hawks countered with nine runs over the final two innings including the grand slam in the seventh that capped a five-run inning.

The Red Dragons exploded for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead.  The big blows in the inning were a two-run home run by senior Cody Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack) and a two-run double off the bat of junior Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville).  Plata also added an RBI single to account for the fifth run.

New Paltz's seventh inning rally came off Oneonta relief pitcher, Jarred Bronley (Katonah/Somers), who entered the game for starter, Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane), who threw six innings allowing 12 hits and six earned runs.  Bronley was only able to record two outs in the seventh, but loaded the bases with three walks before an RBI single and the walk off ended the game.

Massaroni finished game 2 with three hits and three runs batted in to lead the offense overall.  Plata had a pair of hits, scored two runs and drove in a pair for Oneonta.

Apr. 10th at St. John Fisher, L 4-12
The Oneonta State baseball team travelled to St. John Fisher for a game last Tuesday. They fell to the Cardinals 12-4.

St. John Fisher struck in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings, scoring three runs in each of their bottom halves. Oneonta countered, getting a run back in the fourth. Tory Bouyea (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Knack moved Bouyea to third on a bunt single down the left field foul line. Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) hit a line drive single between first and second to score Bouyea.

Oneonta was able to pick up a second run in the top of the sixth inning after Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) doubled to center field and scored on a Levandusky double.

The Red Dragons continued to battle and would not go down without a fight. In their last at bats, Salvatore started the ninth off with a single up the middle. His hit was followed by a Charlie MacDowell (Middletown/Minisink Valley) single, moving Salvatore to second. Mike Fernald (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) was hit by a pitch which moved the base runners all up a base. Bouyea then singled to right field scoring Salvatore. After a failed pick off attempt, Bouyea advanced to second, Fernald to third and allowed MacDowell to score.

Bouyea and Levanduski finished the game with a pair of hits. Levanduski also added a pair of runs batted in.

Softball (7-13/2-4)

Apr. 7th at Potsdam, W 4-2; W 9-8
The Oneonta State softball team rebounded from a pair to Plattsburgh by sweeping SUNY Potsdam last Saturday on the road.

In game 1 of the day’s twin bill, Oneonta scored all four of its runs on wild pitches, which allowed runners from third base to score.  The Red Dragons finished the first game with five hits including a pair by senior Kalyn Deso (Schenectady/South Colonie).  Freshman Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) struck out five batters and allowed four hits and two earned runs in 5-1/3 innings to pick up her first collegiate victory.  Classmate Stephanie Gaska (Harpursville/Harpursville) recorded her first collegiate save in pitching the final 1-2/3 innings allowing no hits.

Game 2 was a slugfest with the Red Dragons getting the better of the Bears in the end on the scoreboard.  Freshman Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs batted in to lead the offense that collected 10 hits in the game.  Deso had a pair of hits including a double and two runs batted in.

Starter Katie O'Flynn (Pearl River/Pearl River) picked up the win in game 2.  After being lifted in the first inning, she reentered in the fifth inning with Oneonta trailing.  She pitched a total of three innings and allowed four hits and four runs, none of which were earned.  Gaska pitched four innings in relief of O'Flynn and allowed six hits and four runs, three earned.

Oneonta jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  Marzillo doubled in a run while Deso and Laura Loudis (Loundonville/Colonie Central) each singled home a run.

Potsdam scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and added a single run in the second inning as they had a 5-3 lead entering the third.  Oneonta tied the score with a pair of unearned runs in the third inning to tie the game at 5-5.

The Bears took the lead back in the bottom of the third off a solo home run. Marzillo would hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth to even the game at six apiece.  Potsdam would add single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to hold an 8-6 lead entering the sixth inning.

The Red Dragons came back in the top of the sixth and scored three runs to take back the lead at 9-8.  Marzillo drove in one run with a single.  Deso drove in the second run on a fielder's choice and Tricia Kendziera (Poughquag/Arlington) drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Apr. 10th vs. Rensselaer, W 1-0; L 1-5
Freshman Hitt outdueled Rensselaer's number one pitcher Kristina Weltzin last Tuesday at home to help the Red Dragon softball team split with the Engineers. Oneonta took game 1 of the doubleheader, 1-0, behind Hitt's complete game five-hitter.

The game remained deadlocked at zeros going into the bottom of the seventh when senior Deso started the inning off with a single to left center. She later moved to second base after an error by an Engineer infielder. Chandler Campbell (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) came to the plate with two outs and roped a shot to left center that brought Deso home from second for the game-winning run.

Rensselaer left eight runners on base, including two innings with runners on second and third, but Hitt was able to shut the Engineers down. Hitt picked up her second win of the season after striking out three batters and only walking two.

Deso finished game one with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate. Freshman Marzillo had the only extra base hit for the Red Dragons with a double in fourth inning.

In the second game, Rensselaer took a 4-0 lead after four. All of their runs came after the Red Dragons were able to get the batter and base runner on a double play.

The Red Dragons scored in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-1. Loudis singled to right center and moved to second on a shot back at the pitcher by Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland). Loudis later scored on an error by the shortstop for Oneonta's only run.

The Engineers got an insurance run in the seventh to shut to door on the Red Dragons.

Men’s Lacrosse (2-8/0-2)

Apr. 7th at Cortland, L 6-11
Oneonta State travelled to their rival Red Dragons of Cortland last Saturday for a men’s lacrosse match-up. Cortland currently is ranked #2 nationally in the most recent men’s lacrosse polls and showed their muscle as they defeated Oneonta 11-6.

Cortland scored first, just shy of two minutes into the game, but Oneonta countered when junior Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley). The goal came after a turnover by a Cortland player caused by goalkeeper Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius).

The Red Dragons of Cortland rattled off five unanswered goal in a fifteen minute span between the first and second periods before van de Veerdonk scored his second.

The trend continued as Cortland would score countered with three and then two sandwiching an Oneonta goal by Blair Hanson (Fayetteville/Fayetteville Manlius) assisted by John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks).

Oneonta would score the last three goals of the game. The first was van de Veerdonk’s third goal of the game on a man-down opportunity. Keith McNierney (Commack/Commack) got his first off an assist by Anthony Laureano (Holtsville/Sachem East) with 2:08 left in the game. The Red Dragons scored the games final goal at 1:14 when Daniel Stern (Shoreham/Shoreha-Wading River) assisted DeOrdio.

Oneonta jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the opening seven minutes led by junior Tulley, who scored all three of her goals in the middle of Monteith and freshman Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East).

The two teams played even for the remainder of the half as Oneonta took a 9-4 lead into the break.

The two squads exploded offensively in the second half combining for 23 goals.  Monteith got Oneonta going in the first minute of the second half with an assist from Tulley to make the score 10-4.  New Paltz continued to battle and a goal by Julia Johnson midway through the second half cut Oneonta's lead to three goals at 13-10.

Oneonta seized back the momentum from that point, outscoring the Hawks 9-4 the rest of the way for the final margin of victory.

Tulley added three assists in the game for a total of six points.  Junior Andrea Spano (Mt. Sinai/Mt. Sinai) collected three goals and one assist.  Freshman Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) had two goals including the game-winner to go with a pair of assists.

The Oneonta State men's tennis team pulled out a close 5-4 win on last Saturday at home versus Farmingdale State.  Oneonta swept the doubles matches and won two of the six singles matches in recording the victory.

The clinching match for the Red Dragons actually came at third doubles.  Down 5-2 in the tiebreak, freshman Mackenzie Park (Elmira/Elmira Free Academy) and Jordan Reiley (Manorville/Eastport South Manor) came all the way back to win 7-5 and win the match 9-8.  This point would be critical in the win because Oneonta took only two points in singles.

Oneonta's two singles victories came at third singles and fifth singles by seniors Joey Milstein (Slingerlands/Guilderland) and Joshua Slifkin (Flushing/Nordhoff (CA)), both in straight sets.
