Men’s Basketball (1-11/0-5)
Jan. 1st at Greensboro College, L 75-82
Despite four players in double figures, the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team fell to Greensboro College on New Year’s Day 82-75. Sophomore
Kevin Donahue (South Glens Falls/South High) led the Red Dragons with 19 points, but a late rally by the Pride overtook Oneonta on the road in the first game of the new year.
Oneonta held a 40-35 advantage at halftime and continued to hold its lead until a layup tied the game at 49 apiece at the 12:32 mark of the second half.
The hosts took the lead for good on a turnover by newcomer
Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown) less than a minute later. An 11-3 spurt after it was tied gave the Pride an eight point lead at 60-52 with 8:13 remaining. Oneonta cut the lead back to four points on a pair of free throws by Mager, who scored 11 points in his debut with Oneonta.
Greensboro forced 21 Oneonta turnovers that led to 28 points in the contest. The Red Dragons held a slight edge in rebounding, 38-36, including 13 off the offensive glass.
Joining Donohue and Mager in double figures were juniors
Nick Sarchioto (Duanesburg/Bishop Gibbons) and
Cameron Boyden (Vestal/Vestal) with 12 points and 10 points respectively.
The Pride started the game off strong, using an 8-0 run to grab a 28-19 midway through the first frame. The Red Dragons answered with a spurt of their own, tying the game up at 28-28 with 5:42 showing on the clock. A lay-up by
Mager with 3:04 remaining put Oneonta State back on top 34-32 and the margin would grow to as many as six prior to the break.
Jan. 5th at Franklin & Marshall, L 46-65
The Oneonta State men’s basketball game dropped their second game on their trip south as #8 nationally ranked Franklin & Marshall defeated the Red Dragons 65-46.
The Diplomats jumped out to an early 16-2 lead eight minutes into the game and never looked back. Oneonta came within 15 points, 20-5, at 8:18 before F&M went on a 12-6 run to go up 32-11 with 3:36 remaining in the half. The Red Dragon countered with eight unanswered points for a 32-19 halftime score.
F&M opened the second with a 19-8 run to take a 24-point, 51-27, edge at 9:33. The Diplomats never trailed by more than 19 points the remainder of the game and led by as much as 26 points in the final half.
Sarchioto netted a team-high 10 points for the Red Dragons and
Lukas Slivinsky (Brewster/Brewster) finished with nine.
Jan. 10th vs. Plattsburgh, L 61-70
The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team had three players reach double figures led by sophomore
Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa), but the Red Dragons fell at home to Plattsburgh 70-61. Lee scored 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor that included 3-of-4 from long range, but Oneonta was out rebounded 39-16 in the contest.
The visiting Cardinals had 17 offensive rebounds and had three players in double figures last Tuesday night in picking up its third SUNYAC win of the season.
Oneonta battled back from a 56-48 deficit with just over nine minutes to go in the contest to tie the score at 56 apiece with exactly four minutes left. Plattsburgh scored 11 unanswered points over the next three minutes to put the game out of reach.
Joining Lee in double figures for Oneonta was classmate Donahue and junior
Sarchioto who scored 11 points and 12 points respectively.
Women’s Basketball (7-4/5-0)
Jan. 2nd vs. Gwynedd-Mercy, W 62-59
SUNY Oneonta senior
Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills) scored a game high 17 points in leading the women's basketball team to a 62-59 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy College to open 2012. Szkotak's first basket of the second half, which happened to be a three-point basket, also put her over the 1,000 point mark for her career. She is the sixth woman to surpass the mark and the first since Milford, N.Y. native Shannon Weir passed it in 2009. Szkotak reached 1,000 points in her 91st game, making her the fourth fastest to reach the mark all time. Szkotak currently stands at 1,009 points in the sixth spot, just 20 points away from Kristin Lemon, who stands at No. 5 with 1,029 points. Hall of Famer, Sheryl Ferguson, is at the top of the list with 1,449 career points.
The game was close throughout with a total of 10 ties and the largest lead by either team was seven points, which was reached by both squads. Gwynedd-Mercy gained its seven-point lead at 43-36 with 11:12 remaining in the contest while Oneonta had its seven-point lead at 54-47 with 5:15 to go in the game after a basket by freshman
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston).
At 1:09 remaining, the Pride took its last lead at 59-58 after making the second of two free throws. Down the stretch, it was Szkotak who made 4-of-6 free throws to secure victory for the Red Dragons. In the contest, Szkotak made 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Sophomore
Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) and junior
Gabi Regan (Troy/Columbia) added 11 points and 10 points respectively off the bench for Oneonta, which made 20 of its 24 free throws in the game.
Jan. 10th at Plattsburgh, W 50-36
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team defeated Plattsburgh on the road last Tuesday night 50-36 for its third straight win while remaining perfect in the SUNYAC. Oneonta is 5-0 in the SUNYAC for a second consecutive season. Last year the Red Dragons won its first six games in the conference.
Oneonta built a 30-17 lead at halftime on the strength of a 14-1 run over a nine-minute span in the first half. They cruised through the second half, building its lead to as many as 16 points twice and not allowing the Cardinals to get any closer than eight points as Plattsburgh shot only 19 percent in the second half. Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland) was the top scorer for the women tonight with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting that included three from behind the arc.
Madison Slagle (Rome/Rome Catholic) had a good defensive outing for Oneonta recording seven defensive rebounds and three blocks.
Wrestling (5-6)
Jan. 7th at North/South Duals at Ursinus
vs. McDaniel, W 19-17; vs. Scranton, W 33-12;
vs. Delaware Valley, L 12-23; vs. Ursinus, L 3-32
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team competed last Saturday at the North/South Duals hosted by Ursinus College. The Red Dragons faced four opponents on the day and came away with an even 2-2 split for their efforts.
Leading Oneonta was junior
Joey Hauser (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) and senior
Jimmy Neal (Glens Falls/Glens Falls), who each recorded three wins on the day. Hauser had two regular decisions and one major decision while Neal recorded two major decisions and a regular decision.
Oneonta won its first two matches of the day, 19-17 over McDaniel College and 33-12 versus Scranton. The Red Dragons trailed McDaniel 14-6 before winning three consecutive matches including a pin by sophomore
Jake Smith (St. James/Smithtown) at 197 lbs. to give Oneonta a 19-14 lead.
Versus Scranton, Oneonta jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead with a forfeit at 125 lbs. and a pin at 133 lbs. by
Ben Mikac (Lackawanna/Williamsville East). Mikac would go 2-2 on the day for the Red Dragons.
In its final two matches, Oneonta fell behind 16-0 to Delaware Valley and couldn't recover as they lost 23-12. Neal, Smith,
Dan Graff (LaGrangeville/Arlington) and
Vincent Barber(Clintondale/Highland) each recorded wins in the match. Graff and Barber both were 2-2 today.
Hauser was the lone winner in a 32-3 loss to host Ursinus in the final match for the Red Dragons.
