Baseball (4-6/0-0)

Mar. 12th vs. Juniata, L 4-6
Mar. 13th vs. Clarkson, L 5-13; vs. U Mass Boston, W 3-1
Mar. 14th vs. Framingham State, L 5-6

After starting out 2-0 on its spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla., the SUNY Oneonta baseball team dropped three of its next four and stands at 3-3 overall. The lone win for the Red Dragons was against #15 U Mass Boston, who was a participant in the 2010 College World series. Oneonta got a complete game, seven-hitter from junior Joshua Herzenberg (White Plains, White Plains) in a 3-1 victory. Herzenberg struck out nine batters and allowed only the one run over nine innings.

The Red Dragons trailed in the game 1-0 entering the bottom of the 7th inning where they touched up the Beacons’ starter for a pair of runs to take the lead. Sophomore Bryan Marotta (Clifton Park, Shenendehowa) led off the inning with a double and came around to score on Pete Lindner's (Voorheesville, Voorheesville) single on the next at-bat. Sean Fruscio (Latham, Shaker) ran for Lindner and scored on an RBI single off the bat of junior Cody Hitt (Boonville, Adirondack).

Oneonta’s final run came in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Dean Haussel (Sound Beach, Miller Place), who had replaced Lindner at first base. He drove in junior Kevin Knack (Ghent , Ichabod Crane) who walked to start the inning and stole second to get in scoring position.

Oneonta’s three losses came against Juniata, Clarkson and Framingham State College. Juniata scored three runs in the home half of the eighth inning to secure a 6-4 win over the Red Dragons. Oneonta managed only three hits in the contest.

In the Clarkson loss, both squads had 13 hits, but the Golden Knights scored 13 runs to Oneonta’s five runs to take the win. In the game, senior Jonathan Wolfanger (Oneonta, Oneonta) and sophomores Mike Mascari (Syracuse, Westhill) and Nate Jones (Apalachin, Seton Catholic) each had a pair of hits. Freshman Jake Robinson (East Norwich, Oyster Bay) drove in a pair of runs.

In the 6-5 loss to Framingham, a ninth-inning rally fell short as the Red Dragons entered the inning trailing 6-2.

Michael DeCarr (Syracuse, Westhill) doubled to lead off and advanced to third on a fly to right by Marotta. Lindner's sacrifice fly to right scored DeCarr to make it 6-3. Eric Wells (Athens, PA, Athens) then reached on a fielding error and Hitt singled. Mascari followed with a two-run triple, but he was left there when Jones flied to the warning track in right to end it.

Framingham scored five runs off losing pitcher Corey Andresen (Deposit, Deposit), and relievers Jim Hegmann (Middletown, Pine Bush) and Robinson in the fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead.

Mar. 15th vs. Messiah, L 6-7 Game 1; W 16-2 Game 2
Mar. 16th vs. Keene State, L 2-6
Mar. 17th vs. Amherst, L 4-6

The SUNY Oneonta baseball team completed its spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla. last Thursday with a 12-inning, 6-4 loss to Amherst College.

In their last four games of the trip, Oneonta managed a doubleheader split with Messiah while falling to Keene State and Amherst. Against Messiah, the Red Dragons let a 5-1 lead slip away in game one of the twin bill as they fell 7-6. In game two, Oneonta assaulted Falcon pitching en route to a 16-2 victory.

The Keene State game was a rematch of last spring’s NCAA regional contest where Oneonta eliminated the Owls from the NCAA tournament. This time Keene got the better of Oneonta in a 6-2 win.

For the trip, it was junior Knack and sophomore Marotta that led the offense, hitting .371 and .344 respectively. Marotta had the team’s lone home run during the trip and drove in a team high seven runs. Knack led the team with 13 hits and had a pair of doubles and one of the seven triples that the Red Dragons had on the trip.

A pair of juniors and a rookie led the pitching staff. The duo of Herzenberg and Jeffrey Carter (Clifton Park, Shenendehowa) both pitched well in their two starts in Florida. Freshman Robinson was solid out of the bullpen in his first collegiate action. Herzenberg pitched a complete-game in his first start of the season, a 3-1 win against UMass Boston, who went to the College World Series last year. In his second start, he got a no decision after 7-1/3 innings versus Amherst. Herzenberg finished the trip 1-0 with a 2.20 ERA with 14 strikeouts.

Carter, who went 1-0, struck out six batters in his 11 innings in his two starts and had a team low 1.59 ERA. Robinson made three appearances in relief, struck out eight hitters in 10 innings of work, and had a 1.80 ERA.

Women’s Lacrosse (0-6)

Mar. 18th vs. Scranton, L 7-15

Seven different players scored last Saturday, but the SUNY Oneonta women’s lacrosse team fell in its home opener to Scranton 15-7.

Oneonta scored the first and last goal of the first half, but Scranton tallied nine goals in between to carry a 9-2 lead into halftime. Oneonta’s opening goal came from junior Heidi Kissinger (East Islip, East Islip) 3:36 into the contest on a free position shot. The final goal of the half was by sophomore Andrea Spano (Mt. Sinai, Mt. Sinai) unassisted with six seconds remaining in the opening 30 minutes.

Scranton scored the first three goals of the second half before Oneonta stopped the run with back-to-back goals. Sophomores Sarah Stark (Huntington, Harborfields) and Caroline Tulley (Malverne, Sacred Heart Academy) scored less than two minutes apart for the Red Dragons.

The two teams then traded goals for the remainder of the contest for the 15-7 final.

Junior Annelise Muscietta (Lindenhurst, Walter O'Connell Copiague) and freshman Laura Grose (Yorktown Heights, Yorktown) each made six stops in goal for Oneonta.

Men’s Lacrosse (1-4/0-0)

Mar. 19th vs. St. John Fisher (#17), L 6-11

For the first 30 minutes of last Saturday’s men’s lacrosse game, SUNY Oneonta found themselves in control of #17 St. John Fisher leading 5-3 at halftime. Unfortunately, the second 30 minutes did not go Oneonta’s way en route to an 11-6 loss in its 2011 home opener.

Six different players registered goals for the Red Dragons, who fell to 1-4 on the season and junior Chris Miles (Manlius, Fayetteville Manlius) made 17 saves in goal.

Oneonta controlled the first period of play with its tight defense while capitalizing on its opportunities on offense, leading 3-1 at the end. Three unanswered, unassisted goals by sophomores Tyler Jennings (Brewerton, Central Square), John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks, Chenango Forks), and freshman Daniel Stern (Shoreham, Shoreham-Wading River).

After goals by Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley, Putnam Valley) and Brian Kollar (East Islip, East Islip) gave Oneonta a 5-1 lead in the second period, St. John Fisher answered with a pair of its own to cut the lead back to 5-3.

St. John Fisher scored four straight goals in the third period to take the lead at 7-5.

Oneonta cut the lead back to one goal at 7-6 when freshman Joey Finnegan (West Islip, West Islip) scored with an assist from sophomore Mike Salerno, but that would be it for the Red Dragons as the Cardinals closed with the game’s final four goals.

Mar. 24th at Ithaca, L 6-13
Sophomore van de Veerdonk scored three times last Thursday, but the SUNY Oneonta men’s lacrosse team lost a nonconference battle at Ithaca.

The opening goal of the game was scored at the 6:55 mark of the first period to give the Bombers the lead.

Sophomore Mike Salerno (West Babylon, West Babylon) tied the score 25 seconds later after freshman Joe Nacarlo (West Babylon, West Babylon) won the faceoff for Oneonta. The goal was unassisted as were all of the Red Dragons’ goals.

The Bombers then seized control of the contest, scoring the next five goals, the last at the 1:53 mark of the second period by Silipo.

van de Veerdonk notched his first goal with 14 seconds remaining in the second period to cut the Bombers lead to 6-2 heading into halftime.

Ithaca scored four times in the third period while holding Oneonta scoreless to go ahead 10-2. The Bombers scored the first goal of the fourth period before an unassisted goal by van de Veerdonk stooped the run of five unanswered goals by the hosts.

The Red Dragons outscored Ithaca 4-3 in the final period for the final of 13-6.

Men’s Tennis (4-4)

Mar. 19th at St. John Fisher, W 7-0
Mar. 20th at Rochester, L 2-7

The Oneonta State men’s tennis team slipped into the ITA Northeast Region rankings this past week at No. 19. The Red Dragons are ranked for the first time since the spring of 2008 when they were 24th in the region, which marks the second time during Coach Bill May’s tenure.

Oneonta’s spring schedule has included #1 Middlebury and #8 Brandeis prior to facing #16 Rochester last Saturday, which has added strength to its schedule. The Red Dragons have also competed versus #10 Skidmore, #14 St. Lawrence and #17 Ithaca in the past. Just last Saturday, Oneonta traveled to #16 Rochester.

Because the Red Dragons are not in a conference for men’s tennis currently, its only chance to be selected to the NCAA tournament is through the strength of its schedule as an independent.

Oneonta is currently 4-4 in dual matches this year after splitting a pair of weekend matches in Rochester. Last Friday, the Red Dragons defeated St. John Fisher 7-0, before falling to the University of Rochester Saturday, 7-2.

Versus St. John Fisher, Oneonta swept through the doubles and then won four of the six singles matches for the 7-0 final. The matches at fourth and sixth singles were not completed due to darkness.

Singles winners were freshman Michael Kennelly (Irvington, Irvington), sophomore Adam Shapiro (East Rockaway, Lynbrook) and juniors Joey Milstein (Slingerlands, Guilderland) and William Sacco (Canandaigua, Naples) at first, second, fifth and third singles respectively, all is straight sets.

Sacco paired with classmate Jonathan Dorin (Lynbrook, Lynbrook) at first doubles to win 8-3. Kennelly won 8-5 at second doubles with partner John Taft (Queensbury, Glens Falls). Shapiro teamed with classmate Joshua Slifkin (Ojai, CA, Nordhoff) to win at third doubles 8-1.

Shapiro and Slifkin managed Oneonta’s only wins last Saturday against Rochester at second and sixth singles respectively. Shapiro won in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 while Slifkin won his match in a third set super tie break, 1-6, 6-4, and 10-6.

Kennelly (1st singles), Sacco (3rd singles) and Dorin (4th singles) all fell in tough, three-set matches.

Kennelly and Shapiro share the team lead in wins with five each.
