Weekly Sports Update - March 11, 2011

Women’s Track & Field

Mar. 3rd & 4th at ECAC Championships, 24th place with 11.5 points

The SUNY Oneonta track and field team competed in the ECAC Championships hosted by NYU this past Friday and Saturday.

The quartet of junior Lauren Brunetto (Fishkill, Beacon), senior Kristen Stein (Gloversville, Gloversville), sophomore Carolyn Nasr (LaGrangeville, Arlington), and senior Celia Alterio (Amherst, Amherst) crossed the line in 11th place running a season’s best time of 12:15.02.

The women also got a chance to run the 4x200 meter relay. Senior Kristan Catanese (Baldwin, Kellenberg memorial), freshmen Kaitlyn Brandt (West Islip, West Islip), and Shana Ventresca (Niagara Falls, Niagara Falls), and senior Connie Belkevich (Ticonderoga, Ticonderoga) finished the event in 19th with a time of 1:50.04.

In the field, it was the triple jumping freshman pair of Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats, Edmeston) and Michelle Chartrand (Boiceville, Onteora). Hamm, an NCAA provisional qualifier in the event had a leap of 10.91 meters (35’ 9 ½”) good enough for 13th. Chartrand finished in 20th with a jump of 10.74 (35’ 3”).

Last Saturday was another positive day for the Red Dragons. Led by junior Brunetto, who captured the ECAC title in the 800 meters one week after winning the SUNYAC title in the event.  She came out and captured the title and improved her NCAA provisional time to 2:13.91. She currently sits 12th in Div. III and will look to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Columbus, OH hosted by Capital University.

In the 400-meter dash, seniors Liz Maziejka (Fort Edward, Hudson Falls) and Stein led the way for the Red Dragons. Stein hit a personal best time of 59.86 to finish 17th place. Maziejka finished right behind in 18th with a time of 59.89 in the event.

The foursome of Maziejka, Stein, Catanese, and Brunetto came together to compete in the 4x400 meter relay where they ran a season’s best time of 3:59.92 to finish 11th.

In the field events, junior Sarah Timmons (Schodack, Maple Hill) threw 15.22 meters (49’ 11 ¼”) in the 20-lbs. weight throw hitting the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She hit the mark on her first throw of the day finishing in 11th place.

Chartrand, who competed in the triple jump last Friday came back and competed in the long jump last Saturday. Her leap of 4.71 meters (15’ 5 ½”) put her 22nd at the championships.

In the high jump, sophomore Kacy Boburka (Binghamton, Chenango Valley) hit 1.63 meters (5’ 4 ¼”) to finish in seventh. Boburka remains third in the country going into Division III NCAA Indoor Championships with a height of 1.70 meters (5’7”).

 

Men’s Track & Field

 

March. 3rd & 4th at ECAC Championships, 32nd place with 8.5 points

The SUNY Oneonta men’s track and field team participated in the ECAC Championships this past Friday and Saturday hosted by NYU.

Senior Durell Cull (Rome, Rome Free Academy) set a good tone for the team in the prelims last Friday by running an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 6.47 in prelims of the 55-meter dash putting him 4th in Saturday's final.

The foursome of freshman John Longo (Endwell, Maine-Endwell), junior Sean Wren (Delanson, Duanesburg), and seniors Sean Daly (Weedsport, Weedsport) and Nick Pampena (King's Park, King's Park) crossed the line in 14th with a time of 10:17.79.

In the 800-meter run for the men it was freshman standout Tom Haskins (Tully, Tully), who ran a personal best time of 1:55.20 to finish 9th at the championships.

Cull was third going into finals of the dash and did just that. He finished third improving his time this season by .03 seconds with a time of 6.45 again hitting the NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Wren finished the open 400 with a time of 49.97 to finish 11th overall in the event.

In the high jump, Dustin Cox (Pulaski, Pulaski) finished sixth with a leap of 1.90 meters (6’ 2 ¾”) and will look to improve during the outdoor season.

 

Men’s Lacrosse (0-2/0-0)

 

Mar. 5th at Clarkson, L 13-17

Sophomore Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley, Putnam Valley) scored four goals and added one assist, but it wasn’t enough as the SUNY Oneonta men’s lacrosse team fell at Clarkson in the season opener for both squads last Saturday.

The Red Dragons led just once in the contest, 2-1, late in the first quarter on back-to-back goals by Brian Kollar (East Islip, East Islip) and Scott Kellman (Suffern, Suffern). The first quarter ended with some fireworks in the final minute as three goals were scored, two by the hosts and one by van der Veerdonk with 17 seconds left in the opening 15 minutes.

The Golden Knights ran off three straight goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter to take a 6-3 lead before van der Veerdonk’s second score of the game cut the lead back to 6-4. Clarkson notched two more goals to take an 8-4 lead until van der Veerdonk scored a man down goal and Kellman scored an even strength goal in the final 1:30 of the second quarter. The Red Dragons found themselves down 8-6 at the break.

Oneonta continued to trail by a pair of goals entering the final quarter before battling back to tie the score at 13 apiece on an unassisted goal by Kollar at the 9:40 mark. Clarkson closed out the game with the final four scores of the contest for the final margin of victory.

Kollar and Kellman both finished the game with three goals. Kollar also added a pair of assists for five points.

Junior Chris Miles (Manlius, Fayetteville Manlius) and senior Sean Reynolds (Bethpage, Bethpage) split the game in goal for Oneonta. Miles made nine saves while Reynolds, who took the loss, made six saves.

 

Mar. 9th at Union, L 6-16

The Oneonta State men’s lacrosse team fell 16-6 to Union College at Frank Bailey Field last Wednesday. The Red Dragons were led by senior Kellman, who recorded one goal and seven shots in the game.

Union jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first quarter on a goal with two Oneonta players serving holding penalties. The Red Dragons knotted the score at 1 apiece at 5:04 into the first quarter of play as senior Kollar’s shot hit the back of the net.

Oneonta would take the lead at 14:09 of the second quarter on a goal by sophomore Mike Salerno (West Babylon, West Babylon) to go up 2-1, but Union scored eight unanswered goals, seven in the second period to take a commanding 9-2 lead.

The Red Dragons made a huge push to close the gap with three of the next four goals in their favor, as Kellman, senior Tom Kelly (Lake Peekskill, Putnam Valley) and junior Joseph Stroessenreuther (Bethpage, Bethpage) each found the net to cut deficit to 10-5 heading into the final quarter of play.

Union would run off six straight goals in the fourth quarter to give Union a 16-5 lead with 5:01 to play. Senior Kris Wodiska (Lake Rokonkoma, Sachem North) scored the final goal of the contest at 1:45 looking for the comeback but the Red Dragons came up short.

Senior Reynolds made 15 saves for the Red Dragons.

 

Softball (2-0/0-0)

 

Mar. 10th vs. Haverford, W 17-6 (played in Arizona)

            The SUNY Oneonta softball team opened their 2011 season in Tucson, Arizona last Thursday with a victory over Haverford 17-6.

            The Red Dragons started slowly going down 3-0 by the end of the second inning, but four runs in the fourth inning opened the scoring for Oneonta. A pair of singles by freshman Tricia Kendziera (Poughquag, Arlington) and senior Stacey Donald (Saugerties, Saugerties) got the inning started. The runners advanced on a sac bunt by freshman Chandler Campbell (Port Jervis, Port Jervis). Kendziera scored on a wild pitch and Donald was brought home on a single by Jillian Serraro (Hopewell Jct, John Jay). Senior Sam Voncina (Derby, Lake Shore) closed out the scoring in the fourth with her first homerun of the season.

            Haverford took the lead again in the fifth inning by adding three more runs, before Oneonta closed out the game with a four-run sixth and nine-run seventh.

            The sixth inning started off with hits by Voncina, Katie Hackenburg (Queensbury, Queensbury) and Korin Ditulli (Hyde Park, F.D. Roosevelt). Voncina scored on Ditulli’s hit and Hackenburg later scored on Donald’s single, who stole second and later scored on Campbell’s hit.

            The seventh inning saw the Red Dragons bat around where they scored nine runs on six hits. The hits included two doubles, by Voncina and Hackenburg and a homerun by Voncina.

Voncina finished the game going 4 for 5 while picking up her first doubles (2) and first homeruns (2) of the season. She also had four RBI’s and four runs scored. Campbell picked up three RBI’s and Hackenburg got her first double of the year.  

            Junior Jessica Bartalsky (New Paltz, New Paltz) earned her first victory of the season. She pitched seven strong innings allowing six runs, four earned runs, on nine hits. She walked three batters while striking out one.

 

Mar. 10th vs. Pitt-Bradford, W 12-5 (5) (played in Arizona)

            The Red Dragons picked up their second victory in Arizona last Thursday with a victory over Pitt-Bradford in five innings, 12-5.

            Oneonta scored in each of the four innings they came to bat.

            A three-run first inning started Oneonta off on the right track. Singles by Serraro and Hackenburg paired with an error scored Kendziera, Ditulli and Serraro.

            Senior Laura Nowak (Akron, Akron) walked to start the second inning. She advanced to second on a bunt by Donald. Kendziera earned her second walk in as many innings and scored on a Serraro double to right center. Voncina followed with her third homerun of the season. Ditulli finished off the inning with a single to the pitcher and then stole second.

            The third inning started with a Deso scoring on a Nowak single after she was hit by the pitcher. Donald singled to center field and Nowak scored on a sacrifice fly by Kendziera.

            Three consecutive hits by Voncina, Laura Loudis (Loudonville, Colonie Central), and Hackenburg started a three run fourth inning. Voncina scored on a wild pitch and Loudis scored on a Hackenburg single. Hackenburg scored later in the inning when Donald singled.

            Bartalsky picked up her second win in the same day after pitching a five inning complete game. She allowed four runs on nine hits while giving up two walks and striking out five batters.
