Men’s Basketball (1-8/0-4 SUNYAC)
Dec. 10th at New Paltz, L 74-95
The Oneonta State men’s basketball team fell to 0-4 in the SUNYAC and 1-8 overall after being defeated on the road this past Saturday to New Paltz 95-74.
The first half was battled back and forth as the game say six tie scores and five lead changes going into the break with the Hawks up by three, 40-37. The second half was controlled by the Hawks as they never looked back.
The Red Dragons leading scorer was senior
Lukas Slivinsky (Brewster/Brewster), who scored 15 points, thirteen in the second half. Junior
Dan McLaren (Troy/Troy) and freshman
Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) each chipped in nine. Kelly also grabbed eight boards.
Oneonta got 37 point from it’s bench players.
Women’s Basketball (5-4/4-0 SUNYAC)
Dec. 10th at New Paltz, W 61-57
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team remained undefeated in the SUNYAC with a big road win at New Paltz last Saturday 61-57. Senior
Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills) hit a three-point shot with 34 seconds left in the game with the score tied at 57 apiece. Oneonta will enter the semester break in first place in the conference with its 4-0 record while being 5-4 overall.
After Szkotak's basket, New Paltz missed a three-point shot on its next possession and the ball was rebounded by Oneonta sophomore
Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford). On the ensuing possession,
Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland) was fouled and she made 1-of-2 to give the Red Dragons the four-point lead with 15 seconds remaining. The Hawks came down and missed another three-point shot and a lay up on the rebound as time expired.
Szkotak registered a double-double in the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Crawford hit double figures for her second straight game and led Oneonta with 11 points while Pappalardo added 10 points.
Oneonta shot just under 30 percent for the game, but did hit 23-of-28 free throws, which was the difference in the contest. The Hawks hit only 10-of-19 from the charity stripe.
Men’s Swimming & Diving (2-2)
Dec. 10th vs. Cortland, W 122-121
It came down to the final relay and sophomore
Connor Vander Plaat (Chester/Warwick) of Oneonta out-touched Alex Spatzer of SUNY Cortland by .11 seconds in 1:32.19 to gain enough points for the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons to defeat its rival 122-121 in dual-meet action last Saturday at the G. Hal Chase Pool.
The dual-meet win for Oneonta was the first dual-meet win versus Cortland since the men's team was elevated back to varsity status in 1998.
Leading Oneonta on the day was junior
Alex Miller (Oneonta/Oneonta) and sophomore
Ryan Walsh (Wingdale/Arlington) as they both won two individual events each while swimming a leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay to start the meet for the men. Miller and Walsh teamed with junior
Scott Bertoldo (Attica/Attica) and Vander Plaat to win the 200-yard medley relay in a new pool record time of 1:40.76.
Miller won both the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:02.99 while he took first in the 100-yard backstroke in a pool record time of 54.46.
Walsh won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:50.20 and then followed later with a new pool record in taking first place in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 52.84.
Other event winners for Oneonta today included freshman
Daniel Donaghy (Holtsville/Sachem East) in the 1,000-yard freestyle and sophomore
Jermaine Miller (Elmira/Southside ) in the 1-meter, five dives session.
Women’s Swimming & Diving (1-3)
Dec. 10th vs. Cortland, L 115-128
Host SUNY Oneonta won five individual events, but its rival SUNY Cortland won six and ended up taking a 128-115 win last Saturday in dual-meet action.
Both teams had one individual win two events in the meet. Oneonta freshman
Kara Garbarino (Latham/Shaker) won both sessions of diving.
Individual event winners for Oneonta included junior
Kristen Magliola (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River), sophomore
Melissa Erickson (Silver Spring, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) and freshman
Alyssa Brennan (St. James/Smithtown East). Magliola won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:18.25. Erickson touched in a time of 5:34.56 to win the 500-yard freestyle. Brennan won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.95.
Wrestling (3-4)
Dec. 10th at Williams Quad Meet
vs. Johnson & Wales, L 18-24; vs. Williams, W 23-15; vs. WPI, W 24-15
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team traveled to Williams College last Saturday to participate in a quad meet with Johnson & Wales and WPI and came away with a 2-1 record in its three matches. Junior
Joey Hauser (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) and sophomore
Dan Graff(LaGrangeville/Arlington) recorded three wins on the day to lead the Red Dragons.
Hauser recorded three wins by decision while Graff recorded two regular decisions and one major decision.
Wrestlers that recorded two wins for Oneonta on the day included sophomores
Ben Mikac (Lackawanna/Williamsville East) and
Sean Hanson (Lorraine/South Jefferson).
Men’s Track & Field
Dec. 10th at St. Lawrence Holiday Relays, 3rd place with 77 points
The SUNY Oneonta men's track & field squad headed north last Saturday to compete at the St. Lawrence Holiday Relays.
Charles Hollister (Cooperstown/Cooperstown), junior
Sean Bernstein(Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and freshman
Robert Farrell (Carmel/Mahopac). Bernstein and Hollister each won an individual event for Oneonta in the meet. Bernstein and Farrell also were a part of the winning 4x200-meter relay with seniors
Sean Wren (Delanson/Duanesburg) and
Jesse Dobson(Farmingville/Sachem East). The foursome came across the line in an ECAC qualifying time of 1:32.46.
Bernstein ran 6.99 to win the 60-meter dash while also winning the 200-meter dash in a meet record time of 22.48. His time in the 60 was faster that he ran last week and is currently the second fastest time in Div. III.
Hollister's victory came in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:52.05.
Farrell bettered his school record set in last week's competition in placing second in the 60-meter hurdles. His time of 8.53 was also good enough to hit the ECAC qualifying mark.
Women’s Track & Field
Dec. 10th at St. Lawrence Holiday Relays, 3rd place with 72 points
The SUNY Oneonta women's track & field squad headed north last Saturday to compete at the St. Lawrence Holiday Relays.
Top performances for the day were turned in by senior
Sarah Timmons (Schodack/Maple Hill) and junior
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley). Timmons and Boburka each won an individual event for Oneonta in the meet.
Timmons followed her dominating performance from last week in the 20-lbs. weight throw by taking first for a second straight week. She threw the weight almost one meter further than last week and shattered her own school record in the process by over eighteen inches. Her distance of 16.68m (54'-8.75”) replaces her old record of 16.21m (53'-2.25”). Timmons throw was also a meet record and currently places her second in Div. III.
Boburka scored in three events including a first place finish in the high jump (1.63m). She was also second in both the long jump (4.98m/16'-4.25”) and triple jump (10.82m/35'-6”).
