Weekly Sports Update - November 11, 2011

Men’s Soccer (14-2-2 Overall)

Nov. 5th vs. Brockport, W 1-0 (SUNYAC Tournament Championship)
Freshman Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) one-touched a crossing pass from junior Alex Shkreli(Bedford/Fox Lane) and put it in the back of the goal in the 62nd minute to lift Oneonta State to a 1-0 victory versus Brockport in the championship game of the 2011 SUNYAC tournament.  The Red Dragons defense made the goal stand as Oneonta captured its first conference title since rejoining the ranks of Div. III in 2007.

Rivera, along with seniors Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills), Nicholas Gregg (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) and Raymond Fitzpatrick (Garden City/Garden City) were all selected to the All-Tournament Team.  Laronde was selected as the tournament Most Valuable Player.

The rest of the All-Tournament Team included Kyle Sauln, Aubrey Brown and Max Egan of Brockport; Pat Shaughnessy and Nate Economou of Plattsburgh; Colin Begy and John Piaggione of Geneseo.

The SUNYAC title is Oneonta's first since 1985, when they were competing in the conference while playing a Div. I schedule.  The Red Dragons earned the SUNYAC's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament, which will be the program's first trip to the big dance since 1975, when they played in the college division tournament bracket of the NCAA.

Oneonta has now won 10 straight games and is unbeaten in its last 15 games entering the NCAA tournament field of 64, which will be announced on Monday afternoon.  The win today also set a program record of 24 games without a loss at home, a streak that began in 2009.  The old record was set during the years 1970-73.

The win was also head coach Iain Byrne's 101st as a head coach, who reached the 100 win plateau in Oneonta's win versus Plattsburgh in the semifinals this past Wednesday.

Oneonta dominated play last Saturday afternoon, generating 17 shots while holding the Golden Eagles to four shots.

Oneonta goalkeeper, Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn/Roslyn) didn't have to make a save in the game.

Field Hockey (14-7)

Nov. 4th vs. New Paltz, W 3-2 (SUNYAC Tournament Semifinal at Cortland)
Freshman Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) scored her team-best fifth game-winning goal in lifting the Oneonta State field hockey team to a 3-2 win against New Paltz in the semifinals of the 2011 SUNYAC tournament hosted by Cortland.

Day's winning goal was at the tail end of a penalty corner for Oneonta.  She was able to deflect a shot out of the air that appeared to be heading wide behind the New Paltz goalie.  The assist went to senior Jacqueline Camp (Queensbury/Queensbury), who scored the other two goals for the Red Dragons for a five-point game.

Camp's two goals came in the first half as the Red Dragons held a 2-0 lead at the halftime.  Junior Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) assisted on both goals as the scores came off penalty corners.  The first goal came in the 10th minute and the second came just under 10 minutes later.

New Paltz, who finished the game with a 13-5 shot advantage, turned up the pressure early in the second half and worked its way back to 2-2 less than 13 minutes into the second half.

Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) finished the game with six saves.

Nov. 5th at Cortland, L 1-2 OT (SUNYAC Tournament Championship)
Top seeded Cortland scored with four minutes, 57 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to lead them to a 2-1 win over second-seeded Oneonta last Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the 2011 SUNYAC Field Hockey Tournament.

Junior Morgan scored Oneonta's goal, while freshman goalie Tracy registered six saves.

Morgan gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead at the nine minute, 56 second mark of the game when she blasted a 10-yard straight-on shot into the lower corner for her 12th goal of the season.

Less than three minutes later, Cortland tied the score on a deflected  pass into the bottom corner.  A Cortland defender kept the game tied at 24:39 when she made a defensive save on Oneonta junior Megan Warning's (Lake Peekskill/Putnam Valley) shot that squirted through the goalies pads.

Cortland generated the first good chances of the second half with back-to-back shots just over 20 minutes in that resulted in a save and a block by Oneonta. With 6:49 left in regulation, the visiting Red Dragons nearly grabbed the lead, but freshman Day sent a deflection wide of the post.

The game winner was scored at 81:03, with a five-yard shot on a loose ball into the lower corner to give Cortland the sudden-victory win.
