Sept. 30th vs. Brockport, W 3-1
The Oneonta State men's soccer team soared past the College at Brockport last Friday afternoon 3-1 at Red Dragon Soccer Field. Freshman
Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) assisted on two goals with the third being scored on a penalty kick by senior
Jonathan Kowalski (Glens Falls/Glens Falls).
Oneonta got on the board in the 15th minute of play when Rivera made a great service to junior
Eric Fortier
(Pleasant Valley/Arlington) who finished the pass off with a header to the top left corner of Brockport's goal. Oneonta made the goal stand up and went into halftime with the one-goal lead.
The Golden Eagles tied the game early in the second half after capitalizing on a penalty kick. Ten minutes later, Oneonta answered back when Kowalski converted his penalty kick.
Oneonta added an insurance goal in the 66th minute when Rivera sent a crossing pass into the box that
Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills) got his foot on to redirect it past Brockport's keeper.
Oneonta out shot the Golden Eagles 9-5 while the two teams were even on corner kicks with four apiece.
Oct. 1st vs. Geneseo, W 2-1 OT
Junior
Dan Josepher (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) scored twice including the game winner in the sixth minute into the first overtime period to lift the Red Dragons over visiting Geneseo last Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Field, 2-1.
Oneonta remains unbeaten in the last eight games while also tying the men's soccer program record for unbeaten games at home, which currently stands at 23. The streak started on October 9th, 2009, when they tied SUNY Plattsburgh, 0-0.
The first half played out to be a midfield battle, as Oneonta held a slight advantage in shots (3-2) and corners (4-3) leading into intermission. The best chance for either team came in the 30th minute when Geneseo hit the crossbar from the top of the box.
Early in the second half, Geneseo nearly went ahead, but the shot also nailed the crossbar and came back.
The games first goal came in the 82nd minute of regulation when junior
Alex Shkreli(Bedford/Fox Lane) passed into the box where Josepher moved the ball by a defender before clipping the ball with the outside of his left foot, which slid along the ground past Geneseo's keeper.
Seven minutes later, a free kick from 45 yards out was headed over Oneonta's
Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn/Roslyn) to tie the game.
Five minutes into overtime,
Nicholas Lange (Freeville/Dryden) served the ball inside the 18, and found teammate
Nicholas Gregg (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) who passed to Josepher and one touched the ball into Geneseo's net.
The Blue Knights lead in shots, 8-7 and Oneonta held the edge in corners, 7-6.
Women’s Soccer (4-5/3-1 SUNYAC)
Sept. 30th at Brockport, W 1-0
The Oneonta State women's soccer team went on the road last Friday to defeat Brockport 1-0.
Senior
Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored the game winner in the 85
th minute off a service from sophomore
Alaina Greco (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa). Greco dribbled the ball down the right flank and served it into DeSimone at the top of the 18 yard box, who sent a left footed rocket past the Golden Eagles keeper. DeSimone leads the team in goals with three.
The Red Dragons got off to a hot start, but was unable to find the back of the net. In the eighth minute of the game, sophomores
Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats/Edmeston) and
Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) combined on a corner kick, but DeSimone's header hit the cross bar and was cleared out by a Brockport defender.
Brockport began to create better opportunities in the second half. The best look at goal for the Golden Eagles came 13 minutes into the second half, when a forward dribbled the ball up the right side and took a shot from about 12 yards out that sailed just high.
Less than five minutes later, D. DeSimone dribbled the ball up the left flank and sent a cross inside the box to freshman
Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). Moinzadeh collected the ball, took a touch and fired a shot that hit the inside of the right post. The ball got cleared off the line by a defender before a Red Dragon could get there to finish it.
Oneonta outshot Brockport 16-4 and held an advantage in corners 11-4.
Red Dragon goalkeeper,
Amy Lusby (West Babylon/North Babylon), made one save on the day to pick up her third win and first shutout of the season.
Oct. 1st at Geneseo, W 1-0
The Oneonta State women's soccer team completed the road sweep this past weekend by defeating Geneseo 1-0 last Saturday on a cold and blustery afternoon. Moinzadeh made it the perfect day to earn the first goal and points of her career in a Red Dragon uniform.
Junior
Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) collected a ball on the left flank and was able to send a low driven service into the six yard box after beating two defenders. Moinzadeh took the opportunity to step in front of her defender and poke the ball into the back of the net in the 53
rd minute to secure the victory.
The game was evenly played in the first half with Oneonta taking two shots to Geneseo's one. The best opportunity for the Red Dragons came when freshman
Meghan Mosch (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) was able to get open about 25 yards out and sent in a shot that was mishandled by the Blue Knights goalkeeper. She was able to cover up the rebound before a Red Dragon player could get there.
Oneonta continued to apply the pressure after scoring the goal. Sophomore
Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield) collected the ball just outside the left post and blasted a shot on goal that hit the side netting.
Geneseo's best opportunity came late in the game when a midfielder played a ball through the back line. Red Dragon keeper,
Lusby, was quick off her line to make the save before a Blue Knight was able to collect it.
Oneonta outshot Geneseo 6-2 and held an advantage in corner kicks 5-1.
Lusby made two saves on the day for Oneonta.
Field Hockey (7-4/1-2 SUNYAC)
Sept. 30th at Cortland, L 0-1 OT (Lost 5-2 PS)
The Oneonta State Field Hockey team dropped a heart breaker on the road to Cortland last Friday 1-0 in penalty strokes. The teams were scoreless through 70 minutes of regulation and two 15-minute overtimes. Cortland won 5-2 in penalty strokes to earn a “team” goal and win the game.
Oneonta freshman
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) finished with 16 saves and the shutout, officially.
Penalty strokes started with five for each team in alternating fashion. Cortland's Katie Barbagallo (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) converted on the first attempt, but the next five shots (three for Oneonta, two for Cortland) either missed or were stopped. Cortland went up 2-0, but Oneonta, however, made its last two strokes – shots by
Jacqueline Camp (Queensbury/Queensbury) and
Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) – sandwiched around a stop by Tracy to force another set of five strokes.
During regulation and overtime, Cortland outshot Oneonta, 31-17, and held a slight 18-15 penalty corner advantage. Each team had good chances to score in each half of regulation. Oneonta's
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) had a shot in the first half hit the right post, and the ball remained right near the goal line before being cleared away by the defense.
Early in the second half, Cortland blasted a shot past Tracy, but Camp was perfectly positioned on the goal line and made a defensive save. With about seven minutes left in regulation, Camp took a hard shot from the right side that hit the netting on the side of the cage.
In the 7-on-7 overtime periods, Cortland took 16 shots, but Tracy made nine saves. One of those saves came on a breakaway with less than three minutes left. Five of Oneonta's six overtime shots came in the final 15-minute period.
Oct. 1st at Oswego, L 2-3
Despite outshooting and out-cornering the host Lakers last Saturday in tough weather conditions, the Oneonta State field hockey team was defeated by Oswego, 3-2.
After a goal in the second minute gave Oswego an early 1-0 lead, Oneonta's Putnam Valley duo of juniors
Megan Warning (Lake Peekskill/Putnam Valley) and Morgan put the Red Dragons ahead 2-1 on a couple of unassisted goals.
Oneonta seemed to have completely seized momentum in the game until Oswego scored a goal eight minutes before intermission to knot the match at 2-2. The teams went into the break tied despite the Red Dragons holding a 10-6 edge in shots and an 11-5 margin in penalty corners.
Oneonta came out reinvigorated in the second half, getting off 12 shots and earning seven penalty corners, but were unable to end the tie. Oswego took a shot that went wide and on the ensuing clear attempt by the Red Dragons, a Laker intercepted an errant pass, dribbled into the circle, and laced a shot past keeper
Tracy with 1:39.
Oneonta put together one final charge as it was awarded a penalty corner in the final minute. However, Oswego State goalie stopped Morgan's shot for her 11th save of the game to preserve the win.
Oct. 4th vs. Hamilton, W 4-3 OT
Junior
Warning scored three times including the game winner in last Tuesday night's overtime victory against #20 Hamilton College, 4-3.
Classmate
Morgan set up the game-winning goal with a great pass from midfield forward. Warning went to goal and banged a shot that trickled over the Hamilton goalie as she came out to try and defend.
Warning opened the scoring with ten minutes left in the first half off a deflected shot from
Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs). Hamilton answered back three minutes later when a Hamilton pulled a move past a Red Dragon defender and blasted the ball to the back of the cage.
Oneonta regained the lead ten minutes into the second half, when Johnson passed to
Camp who redirected the ball into the cage. Seconds later, the Continentals earned a corner was scored when they capitalized off a rebounded shot to tie the score at 2 apiece.
Warning then took charge in the circle, scoring off a loose ball to put the Red Dragons back on top with 19 minutes left in the game. Hamilton fought back hard in the remaining minutes of play and scored with 42 seconds left on the clock when Haskins picked up a loose ball and tied the game, 3-3.
Tracy picked up eight saves in the victory.
Volleyball (11-10/2-2 SUNYAC)
Sept. 30th – Oct. 1st at Fredonia Invitational
vs. Sage Colleges, W 3-0; vs. Pitt Greenburg, W 3-0
at Fredonia, L 0-3; vs. St. John Fisher, L 2-3
The Oneonta State volleyball team competed at the Blue Devil Invitational hosted by Fredonia this past weekend and came out with an even split, going 2-2 overall and finishing in fourth place. Junior
Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalpin-Perth) was recognized for her weekend performance by being named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Red Dragons didn't expend much energy on day 1 of the invitational, sweeping through Sage College and Pitt-Greenburg.
Versus Sage, junior
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) led Oneonta with eight kills and three block assists. Calvello had 25 assists while senior
Jessica Zerega (New City/Clarkstown) had a team high 12 digs.
In its match against Pitt-Greenburg, it was a total team effort as all 16 players saw playing time in the match. Calvello led Oneonta with six kills and 23 assists to go with six total blocks. Sophomore
Bridget McHugh (New Hyde Park/Herricks-Albertson) added five kills and a team high seven blocks.
Last Saturday morning in its opening match of the day, the Red Dragons were swept 3-0 by the host Blue Devils. Senior
Bridget McHugh (Manorville/Eastport South Manor) led Oneonta with eight kills. Classmate
Stephanie Holt (Delanson/Duanesburg) had seven kills and two total blocks. Calvello had 23 assists and Zerega added 10 digs.
In the final match of the tournament, Oneonta came back from a two-set deficit to force a fifth set before falling to St. John Fisher, 3-2 (16-25, 20-25, 25-13, 25-19, 12-15). Fabiochi was the leader with 18 kills. Freshman
Cari English (Yonkers/Cardinal Spellman Bronx) had seven kills with no errors to go with six total blocks. Holt added seven kills and seven blocks while Calvello had 38 assists and Zerega had 22 digs.
Women’s Tennis (7-3/1-2 SUNYAC)
Oct. 5th vs. Cortland, L 3-6
In another battle of the Red Dragons, it was rival SUNY Cortland that came out on top in women's tennis last Wednesday 6-3.
Both teams will now prepare for the conference tournament, which begins on Friday afternoon at Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, N.Y. Cortland will take on Fredonia, the #3 seed in the West at 2pm while Oneonta will face Brockport, who is the #2 seed in the West at 6pm.
The host Red Dragons held a 2-1 advantage after the completion of the doubles matches. Junior
Danielle Browarski (Colonie/Colonie) and sophomore
Lauren Skolnick (Sayville/Sayville) won at first doubles while the duo of freshman
Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) and junior
Christina Wlodarczyk (Avoca/Campbell-Savona) took third doubles.
The visitors ended up winning five of the six singles matches to take home the victory.
Oneonta's lone singles win came by Sussman at second singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
