Sept. 11th vs Allegheny, L 0-1 (Mayor’s Cup Tournament)

The Oneonta women’s soccer fell 1-0 to Allegheny last Saturday in its opening game of the 2010 Mayor’s Cup Tournament. The game was played at Hartwick College as the Red Dragons are now 2-1 in the early season.

The game was as close as the score indicates with Oneonta holding a slight advantage in shots (10-8) and corner kicks (4-1). Junior Amy Lusby (West Babylon/North Babylon)got her first start of the season in goal for the Red Dragons and recorded three saves.

Allegheny’s goal came in the 82nd minute of play as an Allegheny player slid a shot by Lusby unassisted.

Sept. 12th vs. Carroll, W 1-0(Mayor’s Cup Tournament)
Day two of the 2010 Mayor’s Cup tournament for the Red Dragon women’s soccer team was a complete turnaround as they returned to their home field to beat Carroll University 1-0.
Oneonta took advantage of its opportunities better in last Sunday’s game right from the start with three quick shots in the first eight minutes. Carroll responded with its own set of shots with neither team having success.

But the difference in play was team fouls. Carroll was penalized 10 times in the first half alone and finished the game with a total of 18 while Oneonta kept efficient with only eight fouls.
The start of the second half was slow for both teams until freshman Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) had a booming kick from twenty-five yards out that soared over the goalkeeper’s head into the back of the net for an unassisted goal in the 55th minute of play.

Two more freshmen made their presence felt in the final minutes of play. Freshmen Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats/Edmeston) and Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) both had great chances to score, but both let the ball just head over the crossbar and out of play.

Hamm and DeSimone were both honored for their play in the Mayor’s Cup tournament by being announced to the All-Tournament team.

In the final minute of play Carroll’s top shooter had an opportunity in the box. Oneonta keeper, Lusby had come out of goal to grab a loose ball, but couldn’t get to it. The shooter was able to turn and send a ball towards the goal where senior tri-captain, Caitlin Burke, set herself up and blocked the shot to keep Carroll off the scoreboard.
Lusby got her first win of the season and recorded 3 saves on the day.

The Mayor’s Cup is the longest running soccer tournament in the country dating back to 1975. The division III women’s tournament of the Mayor’s Cup is in its 15th year having started in 1996.

Men’s Soccer (3-1-2/0-0 SUNYAC)

Sept. 10th vs. Montclair, T 0-0 (Mayor’s Cup Tournament)

The Oneonta men’s soccer team battled visiting Montclair State to a 0-0 draw last Friday afternoon in the first semifinal game of the Div. III men’s Mayor’s Cup hosted by the Red Dragons. Because of the format of the tournament, there needed to be a winner, so the two teams went all the way to a shootout where the Red Hawks prevailed 5-4.

Montclair held a distinct advantage in shots (30-10) and corner kicks (18-8), but junior goalkeeper, Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn Heights/Roslyn), came up with 17 saves in the game for Oneonta.
Oneonta’s best opportunity came in the first half when senior co-captain, Jordan Flores (Schenectady/Schalmont) hit the cross bar in the 16th minute.

Montclair had a flurry of successive shots in the first overtime period, but none of the shots reached the goal as the Oneonta defense got in the way of each one.

Sept. 11th vs. Widener, W 2-0 (Mayor’s Cup Tournament)
After falling to Montclair State in the first day of competition in the 2010 Mayor’s Cup, the Red Dragon men’s soccer team found resilience defeating Widener 2-0 in the consolation game to finish in third place.

Oneonta took control of the game as soon as the whistle blew, having three shots in the first thirteen minutes of play. Unfortunately the Oneonta couldn’t find the back of the goal as the first half ended deadlocked at 0-0.

In the start of the second half, Oneonta came out fast with four shots in the first 15 minutes with the final one paying off with a goal in the 59th minute by sophomore Dan Josepher (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor). The play was set up off a direct kick by sophomore Dan Scott (Salt Point/FD Roosevelt) who sent the ball towards the goal. Junior Tim Sagasti(Endicott/Union-Endicott) got his head on the ball and flicked it across the box where Josepher finished the play with a shot over the goalie.

It didn’t take the Red Dragons long to notch the next goal as sophomore Ian Tenzer (Mahopac/Mahopac) scored a header goal off a corner kick sent in by Josepher.
The Red Dragons finished the game out shooting Widener 14 to 6.

Keepers Jesse Dobson (Holtsville/Sachem) and Mike Lockwood (Hopewell Junction/Arlington) both played a half shutting out Widener. Lockwood had one save on the day.

Sept. 14th vs. Rensselaer, W 2-1
Oneonta men’s soccer wasted no time getting back on the field defeating Rensselaer last Tuesday 2-1 in a well fought victory.

Oneonta got its chance from the very beginning with two shots in the first eight minutes of play. In the 23rd minute Scott passed across the field to sophomore Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) who redirected the ball and fired it into the back of the net to record his first goal of the season to put the Red Dragons ahead 1-0 going into the half.

In the second half, with goalkeeper Siegelman entering the game, Rensselaer tested the Red Dragons and their defense with three quick shots in the first few minutes but remained unsuccessful.
After a quick shot by Rensselaer, Oneonta made their way down the field and set up the second goal for the Red Dragons. Sagasti flighted the ball 15 yards across the field into the box where Michael Diefenbacher (Marcy/Whitesboro) headed the ball past the keeper into the left corner of the goal to take the lead 2-0.

Rensselaer got themselves on the board in the 86th minute when they scored from the center of the box. With time ticking off the clock, the Engineers played with urgency, moving the ball up the field, but the Oneonta defense didn’t allow any more shots on the goal as time expired.

Sept. 15th vs Rensselaer, W 3-2
Oneonta State women’s field hockey returns to their winning streak defeating Rensselaer 3-2 last Wednesday. The outstanding play of Ainsley Stoll (Williamsville/Williamsville North) kept Oneonta in the game and added yet another win to its record.

Rensselaer was first to get on the board in the 16th minute when a loose ball was tapped into the back left corner of the cage.

It didn’t take long for the Red Dragons to strike back. Stoll recorded her first goal on the day dribbling past the defense and pushing it past the goalie to tie the game at one a piece going into the half.

Stoll continued her dominance scoring again in the 38th minute of play with a shot from the top of the circle.

Shortly after, Rensselaer tied it back up at 2-2 with a redirect shot and goal.

After a shot hitting the post, Stoll kept her composure to record the hat trick, scoring her third goal in the 61st minute to put the Red Dragons ahead 3-2. Rensselaer had a shot in the final seconds of play that went wide but set up one last shot for the Engineers off a penalty corner. The ball came into the box but only bounced around before the Oneonta defense knocked away to end the game.

Including the three goals today, Stoll has a total of seven goals in five games for the Red Dragons this season.
