Women’s Soccer (2-0/0-0 SUNYAC)

Sept. 4th at Rochester, W 1-0 (Flower City Tournament)
Oneonta senior Nha Wright (Schenectady/Duanesburg) scored on a direct kick at 59:33, driving the ball from just outside the left side of the penalty area inside the near post with a slew of players from both teams in front. The Red Dragons made the lone goal stand as they defeated Rochester 1-0 in the season opener last Saturday.

The final stats for the contest were relatively even. The shots were 12-11 in favor of Rochester and the saves were 3-2 for Oneonta. Sophomore Jamie Chyat (Staten Island/Staten Island Academy) picked up her first win of the season for Oneonta making the three saves.

Oneonta’s speed in midfield and in the back kept Rochester at bay. Their best chances came when they got the ball over the defense, but then couldn’t do anything because either Chyat came out to cut the angle, or the shots went wide of the goal.

Early in the first half, Rochester’s goalkeeper dove at the feet of junior Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) just as she got to a breakaway pass in the middle of the penalty area. With eight minutes left in the half, the Red Dragons had another great chance. The Yellowjackets gave the ball away on a bad clear where Oneonta’s Jennifer Fox (Auburn/Auburn) got to it, centered it through the goal area, where freshman Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) ran onto it, only to shoot past the left post.

Rochester’s best chance in the second half came with just under 14 minutes left. The Yellowjackets broke in 3 on 1 and a shot from right win was hit wide of the right post. Rochester had a corner kick in the last four minutes that was missed by Chyat, but another miss-hit send the ball over the cross bar with two of Oneonta’s defenders in front.

Sept. 5th vs. Rutgers Newark, W 2-1 (Flower City Tournament)
Last Sunday junior DeSimone scored a pair of second half goals to lead Oneonta to a come-from-behind win today in the championship game of the Flower City Tournament hosted by Rochester. DeSimone was selected as the MVP of the tournament.

The Red Dragons trailed when Rutgers-Newark went ahead in the 41st minute, scoring off a restart from about 35 yards out. It was 1-0 at the halftime break.
Midway thru the second half, Rutgers-Newark’s goalkeeper made a series of terrific saves as Oneonta stepped up the offensive pressure. With 12 minutes gone, senior Caitlin Burke (Manorville/Center Moriches) smashed a free kick from just outside the area that the keeper turned against the crossbar. DeSimone hit the rebound high.

Oneonta finally broke through in the 70th minute. The Red Dragons latched onto a bad clear. The ball came to DeSimone behind the defense. As the keeper rushed to the edge of the box, DeSimone chipped it past her and just inside the left post at 69:47, tying the score.

The game-winning goal came off a throw in deep in the offensive end on the left sideline. Erin Boyle (West Babylon/West Babylon) threw it to the near post where Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) headed it across the packed goalmouth and DeSimone tipped it into the right side of the net at 80:19.

Men’s Soccer (1-1-1/0-0 SUNYAC)

Sept. 1st at Castleton, W 3-0

Three, second half goals for SUNY Oneonta lifted them to a season opening victory at Castleton State last Wednesday. Seniors Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills) and Larry Pestana (Valhalla/Valhalla) each tallied while newcomer Dan Josepher (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) scored his first collegiate goal in a Red Dragon uniform.

After a scoreless first half that yielded just six total shots, the Red Dragons exploded for three unanswered goals over the final 45 minutes of play to earn the shutout victory in what was the season opener for both teams.

Castleton mustered a pair of solid opportunities at goal in the first half, including a bending direct kick that Oneonta State keeper Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn Heights/Roslyn) stopped for his lone first-half save. Oneonta State quickly countered, but a tackle kept the Red Dragons at bay, and the scoreless tie intact.

Pestana broke into the scoring column in the 48th minute of play, sliding onto a Raymond Fitzpatrick (Garden City/Garden City) through pass and slipping it past Castleton keeper.
Laronde made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute, converting an unassisted tally on a laser inside the upper right hand corner. Laronde ran onto a through ball from the midfield area, outmaneuvered a Castleton defender and unleashed his shot past the goalkeeper.

Josepher rounded out the scoring heading in a Jonathan Kowalski (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) rebound. Oneonta State played the ball across the goalmouth and Kowalski struck a rocket that ricocheted downward off the cross bar, right to Josepher who headed it into the open net.

Siegelman ended the afternoon with two saves to earn the shutout.

Sept. 4th vs. St. John Fisher, T 1-1 (Flower City Tournament)

The SUNY Oneonta men’s soccer team battled St. John Fisher to a 1-1 tie through two overtimes last Saturday in the opening game of the men’s Div. III Flower City Tournament hosted by Rochester. Newcomer Josepher scored the lone goal and his second in as many games for the Red Dragons, who are 1-0-1 after the first two games of the season.

Oneonta fell behind 1-0 in the seventh minute of play when St. John Fisher headed a lose ball by Oneonta keeper Siegelman.

Josepher’s goal came in the 69th minute when he headed in a corner kick service from sophomore Dan Scott (Salt Point/FD Roosevelt).

Early in second half, a Fisher forward headed the ball past Siegelman, but it hit the right post and was cleared by the defense.

Sept. 5th vs. Rochester, L 0-1 (Flower City Tournament)
Last Sunday, Rochester scored on a direct kick in the 19th minute for the only goal of the game. In a somewhat physical game (30 fouls called, three yellows issued), the Yellowjackets were able to hold off the Red Dragons' speed.

Oneonta threw everyone forward in the closing minute (except the GK) in an attempt to equalize. Final shot by Scott in a scramble was blocked by Rochester's goalkeeper and chipped out of the area.

Field Hockey (3-0/0-0 SUNYAC)

Sept. 4th at St. Lawerence, W 3-2 (OT1) (Fall Field Hockey Classic at St. Lawerence)

Oneonta senior Ainsley Stoll (Williamsville/Williamsville) tallied two goals last Saturday including the game-winner in overtime as the Red Dragons opened its 2010 field hockey season with a 3-2 win against host St. Lawrence University. Stoll scored the game’s first goal in the ninth minute and then ended the game in the 76th minute on a breakaway.

Newcomer Stephanie Fiske (Marathon/Marathon) scored a goal and added an assist in her debut for the Red Dragons.

St. Lawrence held sizable advantages in both shots (19-9) and penalty corners (19-9), but Oneonta State goalkeeper Leslie Dauphinais (Harpursville/Harpursville) turned in nine saves to keep her team in the game.

Stoll scored the opening goal of the game at 8:56, when she pounced on a rebound in front of Clark. Fiske was credited with the assist.

St. Lawrence, which out-shot Oneonta 14-3 in the opening half, finally cashed in late in the frame to tie the score at 1-1 before intermission.

The Saints continued to pour on the offensive chances early in the second half, and their pressure paid off at 53:49 they scored their second goal of the game off of a penalty corner to put them up 2-1.

The Red Dragons would not go away, however, and needed only 3:06 to tie the game at 2-2. An Oneonta player rifled a shot the goalkeeper was able to slow down, but the ball trickled behind her towards the goal line. Fiske was there to finish the play and bring the score to 2-2.

Despite having the majority of scoring chances down the stretch, it was the Saints that were on their heels late in the game, as two Saint’s players were sent off with yellow cards, giving the Red Dragons a two-player advantage for nearly four full minutes.

Though St. Lawrence was able to kill off each of the penalties and got back to full strength in the 7 vs. 7 overtime, the fatigue in the midfield had clearly set in. This allowed Stoll to use a burst of speed to go around the Saints’ defense and move in one-on-one with the keeper. The keeper tried to cut off the angle, but Stoll was able to sneak a shot past her left leg pad and into the net, allowing Oneonta State to celebrate the 3-2 victory.

Sept. 5th vs. Thomas College, W 1-0 (Fall Field Hockey Classic)
The Oneonta State field hockey team improved to 2-0 on the young season last Sunday afternoon, as the Red Dragons held off Thomas College by the score of 1-0 at the 2010 “Fall Field Hockey Fest” hosted by St. Lawrence University.

The Red Dragons got the game-winning goal from Stoll, her third goal of the weekend, while Dauphinais earned the shutout with a six-save performance in net.

The majority of play throughout the game was in the Terriers’ end of the field, though the team did a nice job of keeping the ball away from their cage. Thomas put together a flurry of shots off of a penalty corner, but Dauphinais came up with three clutch saves to keep the Terriers scoreless.

As the first half drew towards a close, the Red Dragons earned a corner and would finally capitalize on a scoring try at 29:16. Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) got the play started, as she centered a pass off of the corner outlet pass right on Stoll’s stick, and she blasted a one-timer past the keeper for the 1-0 lead before halftime.

The Red Dragons continued to pile up the offensive tries in the second half, but Thomas College held its ground and was able to stay within a goal thanks to six saves by Dauphinais. The Terriers’ best chance to even the scoring came on their two penalty corners.

Oneonta State closed with a 17-3 advantage in penalty corners and outshot Thomas College 18-6.

Sept. 8th vs. Union, W 1-0
With a late second half goal, the Oneonta Field hockey team came away with a 1-0 win over Union last Wednesday in non-conference action. Senior Stoll scored off of a penalty corner from freshman Fiske. The goal for Stoll was her third game-winning goal in as many games as the team remained undefeated in the early season.

Stoll and Brianne Galli (Amherst/Sweethome) each had a shot in the first three minutes of the game to set the tone for the Red Dragons. Union came back and controlled the remaining first half with five penalty corners and three shots.

Similar to the first half, the second half was managed by Union yet again from the outset with a shot by Union’s Alex King. The strength and experience of senior Dauphinais in goal held Union at bay. She finished the game with nine saves on the day.

Oneonta is now 3-0 for the first time since 1994 when the team had a 4-0 start.
