Women’s Basketball (7-0/2-0)

The SUNY Oneonta women’s basketball team remained undefeated last Sunday with a 66-60 win at Utica College. Local product
Madison Slagle (Rome, Rome Catholic) led four players in double figures with 16 points as the Red Dragons have matched the program’s best start to a season at 7-0. The last time Oneonta won seven straight games to start the season was in 1976-77.
Freshman
Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac, Lakeland) hit a jumper to put Oneonta ahead, 7-6 at the 16:04 mark of the first half. That basket jump started an 11-2 run over the next four minutes that gave The Red Dragons a ten point lead at 18-8. Pappalardo would finish the game with 12 points.
Utica battled back to cut the Oneonta lead to three points at 26-23 on a basket at the 6:03 mark, but the Red Dragons closed the half with a 10-2 spurt to take a 36-25 lead into halftime.
The Red Dragons would extend its lead to as many as 16 points with 7:50 to go in the contest before Utica made one final run. The Pioneers made the game interesting by way of a 16-4 run in a span of 6:46 to cut the Oneonta lead to four points, 61-57, with 1:04 left in regulation.
Oneonta dropped 5-of-6 free throws with under a minute to go to seal the six point victory.
Oneonta shot 42.6 percent from the floor (26-of-61) on the afternoon. Junior
Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills, New York Mills) netted 10 points while senior
Erika Puffer (Unadilla, Unatego) scored 10 points off the bench while collecting a team high nine rebounds.
Men’s Basketball (1-6/1-1)
Dec. 11th vs. Ithaca, L 84-96
The SUNY Oneonta men’s basketball team had five players in double figures last Saturday, but came up short in a 94-86 loss to Ithaca College. The Red Dragons shot 48% for the game, but the Bombers shot it at 58% in capturing the nonconference road win.
Senior
Brian Hooks (Cohoes, Shaker) was the top man for Oneonta scoring 20 points in 31 minutes of action. Classmates
Troy Talbot (Brooklyn, The School for Legal Studies),
Derek Hahn (Youngsville, Sullivan West) and
Shane Gillette (Hurley, Kingston) contributed 18, 14 and 12 points respectively. Junior
Terrence Parker (Queens, John Adams) was the fifth player in double figures with 10 points.
Oneonta held a lead of 69-67 on a layup by Parker at the 12:17 mark of the second half, but an 11-2 run by Ithaca gave them a nine-point lead at 80-71 with 8:18 remaining.
The Red Dragons got as close as five points at 89-84 on a pair of free throws by Talbot, but the Bombers’ Jordan Marcus made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch for the final margin of victory.
Both teams shot lights out in the first half while scoring a combined 107 points. Oneonta finished the half at 65% while Ithaca shot 60%. There were five ties and five lead changes during the first twenty minutes of action.
Hooks poured in 16 of his team high 20 points in the first half in helping Oneonta hold onto a seven point lead for most of the opening half.
Wrestling (5-3)
Dec. 11th vs. WPI (W, 26-15), vs. Williams (W, 21-17),
vs. Johnson & Wales (L, 17-27)
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team completed its first semester of action last Saturday afternoon by taking two of three dual matches including a 21-17 win versus nationally ranked Williams College.
Leading Oneonta today was a pair of newcomers,
Ben Mikac (Lackawanna, Williamsville East) and
Dan Graff (LaGrangeville, Arlington), along with senior
Brian Kramer (Hopkinton, MA, Hopkinton). All three wrestlers were 3-0 on the day.
In the win versus Williams, who entered as the #20 team in Div. III, Graff recorded a 6-3 decision over nationally ranked Corey Paulish, who came in as the #10 wrestler at 149 lbs. The Red Dragons fell behind 8-3 in the match until Graff’s decision that began a string of five consecutive wins for the Red Dragons to give them a 21-8 lead.

Frankie Provenzano (Islip, Islip) all recorded two wins on the day for Oneonta.
Women’s Swimming & Diving (1-3/0-0)

The SUNY Oneonta swimming & diving teams closed out its first semester of action last Saturday at Cortland and came away with some strong individual performances despite dropping its dual meet to the rival Red Dragons.
The Oneonta women had four individual event winners in its meet. A trio of freshman led Oneonta as
Lindsey Molfino (Jamestown, Jamestown) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:26.84),
Alexxa Poliachik (Niagara Falls, Niagara Wheatfield) was the 200-yard butterfly winner (2:24.58), and
Kelsey Ward (Niagara Falls, Niagara Falls) captured the 500-yard freestyle (5:37.53). Sophomore
Kristen Magliola (Shoreham, Shoreham Wading River)was the 200-yard individual medley in a time of (2:14.22).
Men’s Swimming & Diving (1-3/0-0)

The SUNY Oneonta swimming & diving teams closed out its first semester of action tonight at Cortland and came away with some strong individual performances despite dropping its dual meets to the rival Red Dragons.
Oneonta was led by freshman
Ryan Walsh (Wingdale, Arlington), who won three events – the 100-yard butterfly (53.41), the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.93) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.74). Sophomore
Alex Miller (Oneonta, Oneonta) captured the 100-yard backstroke (55.84) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.61). Classmate
Scott Bertoldo (Attica, Attica) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.43) and SUNYAC Diver of the Week, freshman
Jermaine Miller (Elmira, Southside ) won one-meter diving (304.65 points).
Women’s Indoor Track & Field

The Oneonta State track & field teams ended the fall semester on a high note earning their holiday ornaments at the 2010 St. Lawrence Holiday Relays.
On the women's side, junior
Sarah Timmons (Schodack, Maple Hill) was the top competitor for the Red Dragons winning both the weight throw and the shot put. In the weight, she not only defeated the field by over three meters, but set a new personal and school record in the process. Sophomore
Kate Parsons (Valatie, Ichabod Crane) finished right behind Timmons in the weight throw with her own personal record of 12.37 meters.
Freshman
Michelle Chartrand (Boiceville, Onteora) won her first event as a Red Dragon in the long jump setting a personal record mark of 4.99m. Teammate
Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats, Edmeston) was right behind her and tied for second with a jump of 4.95 meters. In the triple jump it was Hamm who beat the field for the Red Dragons with a jump of 10.74m.
Sophomore
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton, Chenango Valley) hit the ECAC qualifying mark on her way to a first place finish in the high jump. Her Jump of 1.58 meters tied for first, but she beat the competition in attempts giving her the win.
Men’s Indoor Track & Field
Dec. 11th at Holiday Relays hosted by St. Lawrence University, 6th place/46 points
The Oneonta State track & field teams ended the fall semester on a high note earning their holiday ornaments at the 2010 St. Lawrence Holiday Relays.
On the men's side, senior
Nick Pampena (King's Park, King's Park) not only improved his 5000m race time from last week, but crushed the rest of the field by over 30 seconds with a time of 15:24.84. His time set the school record once held by Marty Nicholson, who ran 15:27.42 at the BU Valentine Invitational back in 2009.
Senior
Durell Cull (Rome, Rome Free Academy) and sophomores
Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville, C.W. Baker) and
Sean Wren (Delanson, Duanesburg) all hit SUNYAC qualifying times in the 55-meter dash today. Cull finished in second with a time of 6.65 in the finals, Bernstein finished seventh overall also with a time of 6.65 from the prelims, and Wren finished in 12th with a time of 6.89.
The duo of sophomore
Dustin Cox (Pulaski, Pulaski) and freshman
Kyle McCaleb (Baldwinsville, C.W. Baker) made an impact in the 55-meter hurdles. Cox had a huge personal best in the finals with a time of 8.16 good enough for a second place finish. McCaleb had a personal best of 8.58 in the preliminary race giving him a 7th place finish.
