Women’s Soccer (17-4-2)
Nov. 12th vs. Roger Williams, W 3-0 (NCAA 1st Round)
The SUNY Oneonta women’s soccer team scored two early goals and then cruised the rest of the way en route to a 3-0 win against Roger Williams in the first round of the NCAA Div. III tournament. With the victory, Oneonta advances into the second round for a third straight year.
“Things are coming together at the right time of year,” said Oneonta coach Liz McGrail. “We’ve fought through injuries to key players throughout the year, which allowed different players to step up and show what they can offer.”
Oneonta wasted no time in putting the Hawks behind the eight ball with a goal in the fourth minute of play. Senior
Nha Wright collected a loose ball that was failed to be cleared out of the box on a throw-in. Wright controlled the loose ball and was able to turn and get a shot off along the ground that found its way to the back of the goal just inside the right post.
“Our team has grown so much this season,” said Wright. “We are peaking at the right time. We have a lot of talent and we’ve got great chemistry.”
Oneonta’s second goal came less than six minutes later off a rebound. Freshman
Melissa Guglielmo took a shot from outside the box that was blocked by a Roger Williams defender. Sophomore
Kayla Brantmeyer was there to collect the loose ball and get a shot off before the defense could recover. Brantmeyer’s shot went inside the left post to give the Red Dragons a two goal advantage.
Oneonta dominated in shots, holding a 17-7 advantage. Brantmeyer had six alone including three that were on goal.
Oneonta’s final goal came in the 67th minute when junior
Dana DeSimone was able to dribble from about 35 yards and get herself into the box where she got a shot off that sailed over the goalkeepers head.
Oneonta is making its 12th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and 13th overall. This is the also the third time in the last four years that the Red Dragons have advanced into the second round of the tournament..
“Back in August we set our team goals and one of them was to get past the second round of the NCAA tournament,” said McGrail. “We are looking forward to making it a reality.”
Nov. 13th vs. University of Rochester, W 2-0 (NCAA 2nd Round)
The SUNY Oneonta women’s soccer team scored two second half goals en route to ousting Rochester from the 2010 NCAA tournament this afternoon at Red Dragon Soccer Field. The win for Oneonta moved them into the sectional round of the tournament for the first time since 2005.
Last Saturday’s match went end-to-end with both teams coming away with many scoring chances. In the end though, Oneonta was able to sneak two by the Rochester keeper to send the Red Dragons into the next round.
“Today was a great team effort,” said Oneonta coach Liz McGrail. “Getting past the second round is a first for every player on this team. This team has worked extremely hard to get to this point.”
The first dangerous opportunity for either team came in the fifth minute of the match. Rochester crossed a ball from the left flank that looked harmless, but ended up going through Oneonta keeper,
Amy Lusby’s hands. Fortunately for Oneonta, there was no one from the Yellowjackets on the receiving end to collect the loose ball.
Three minutes later Oneonta got its first real scoring chance when junior DeSimone broke through the Rochester defense and got a low shot off that was deflected aside with a diving, right-handed save by the goalkeeper.
A couple minutes later sophomore Brantmeyer got a shot off from about 10 yards out that soared over the net.
Nothing doing for either team until the 19th minute when a foul was called just outside the box that gave Rochester a direct kick opportunity. The shot was put on goal and hit the cross bar. On the ensuing action, Rochester’s leading scorer headed a ball that went over the goal.
In the 22nd minute, Rochester appeared to score the game’s first goal, but it was waived off due to a handball called against them.
Both teams continued to get its share of chances, but the two goalies kept the game scoreless. Despite out shooting Rochester in the opening half 11-4, the game remained deadlocked at zeros at the break.
The first 10-15 minutes of the second half seemed to be played mostly in Oneonta’s end of the field as the Yellowjackets put on some pressure of its own. They worked to earn a couple of corners and managed to get two shots off that were handled by Lusby. Lusby finished the match with four saves.
In the 60th minute, Rochester was awarded a corner kick that almost turned into a lead for the Yellowjackets. Rochester put a perfect ball into the box that found a Yellowjacket in the midst of all the players in the box. The player sent a sharp header to the right post that was by Lusby. Fortunately, DeSimone was on the post and sent it right back out.
The momentum from that point seemed to shift to Oneonta as they began to pepper the opposition’s end of the field. During the next five minutes, Oneonta got off four shots and generated a corner kick. The most dangerous scoring chance in that spurt came in the 70th minute off a direct kick. A loose ball inside the goal area had freshman
Kori Hamm getting a direct shot that was stopped and pushed aside by the keeper.
The Red Dragons finally broke through on an outstanding individual effort by Brantmeyer in the 78th minute. Off a defended corner kick, she took a loose ball inside her own box and raced the length of the field, beating four defenders along the way, to put Oneonta up 1-0.
“We had some exceptional efforts from many players today,” said McGrail. Kayla’s run and Dana’s goal after saving a goal earlier in the game was tremendous. Nha repeatedly got around the defense to create dangerous opportunities.”
The knockout punch for the Red Dragons came in the 84th minute off a corner kick. Wright sent a ball into the box that found its way to an unmarked DeSimone, who volleyed it to the back of the goal.
Rochester tried to mount an attack in the waning minutes, but it was too little, too late.
“Oneonta did a great job of attacking the ball and sending it forward,” said Gurnett. “I am honored to go out versus such a worthy team.”
