Men's soccer comes home from WNE with draw

Box Score Despite holding a decided advantage in shots and scoring opportunities, the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team left Springfield, Mass. today with a 1-1 tie against Western New England.  The Red Dragons outshot the Golden Bears 24-7, but couldn't push the game-winner across.

"It's hard to believe we didn't win that game," texted coach Iain Byrne.  "We were a threat throughout and must have hit the post three times."

Oneonta (4-2-2) generated 12 of its shots in the first period, but had nothing to show for it, as the two squads went into halftime deadlocked at zero.

In the 63rd minute, the hosts broke the scoreless tie on a goal by Tim Murray off an assist by Kory Caster.

Twelve minutes later, Oneonta finally broke through and tied the score at 1-1.  Sophomore Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season.  Williams headed a ball sent in by junior Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) by the WNE keeper.

Oneonta sophomore Zef Saljanin (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) almost won the game in the 88th minute when he headed a ball that hit the post.

Junior goalkeeper, Daniel DeBottis (/), wasn't credited with a save today for Oneonta, as he moves to 2-1-1 on the season.  His counterpart, Domenick Villano, made six stops for WNE today.

"In the end, it was a good performance against a tough opponent that will prepare us for the physicality of our conference schedule," texted Byrne.

Oneonta's next match will be this coming Friday at SUNY Cortland, as they open the SUNYAC portion of the schedule.
