ONEONTA, NY – The Red Dragons took the No. 1 team in the NSCAA Coaches Div. III poll, the Christopher Newport University Captains into double overtime this afternoon at Red Dragon Field, 1-1.
Junior Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) scored just 11 minutes into the game, cruising past two Captain defenders with a shot from the top of the 18. The game remained a midfield battle into the second period until Christopher Newport's Brian Lybert (Honolulu, HI/Woodbridge) set up teammate Brendan Cook (Williamsburg, VA/Williamsburg Collegiate) with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.
Christopher Newport had six opportunities to secure the win in overtime, but none of the shots reached the back of the goal. Their best chance to score came off a corner kick that floated to the back post and headed on frame. Oneonta's goalkeeper Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn/Roslyn) (Roslyn/Roslyn) came out of nowhere to parry over the crossbar.
The Captains held a slight advantage in shots 14-9, and corner kicks, 12-5. Siegelman tallied seven saves for the Red Dragons, while Justin Wolfe (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) walked away with three.
Christopher Newport is now 4-0-1 on the season and the Red Dragons are 3-2-1.
Oneonta will open conference play next Friday as they travel to SUNY Oswego for a 4:00 start.
