Box Score The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team kept rolling along in the early season today with a 3-1 win against #22 WNEC in the championship game of the Div. III men's Mayor's Cup Tournament. The win for the Red Dragons raises it's overall record to 5-0 while WNEC falls to 3-2 overall. The title for Oneonta was its first in the short three-year history of the Div. III tournament after having captured two Mayor's Cups as part of the Div. I tournament, the last coming in 1999.
Not only did Oneonta come away with the team trophy, but they also took home the Jim Lennox Offensive and Garth Stam Defensive MVP awards. Sophomore
Evan Jedynak (Malta/Ballston Spa) was selected as the Offensive MVP while newcomer
Ian Tenzer (Mahopac/Mahopac) was selected as the Defensive MVP. Jedynak led the Red Dragons yesterday with a pair of goals in a 2-1 win against William Paterson.
Oneonta got on the scoreboard early today as they benefitted from a defensive misplay in the ninth minute of the contest that turned into an own goal. A Golden Bear defender headed the ball back to his keeper, but the ball took a high bounce over the goalie and rolled back towards the goal over the line before the keeper could track it down.
Eight minutes later the Red Dragons went ahead 2-0 when freshman
Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) rifled a shot from the left flank that found the upper right corner of the goal to the WNEC keeper's surprise. The shot appeared to be sailing high and wide, but caught just below the crossbar for the goal and a two-goal advantage just 16:41 into the game.
WNEC's lone goal came in the second minute of the second half, which ignited the Golden Bears. Junior Justin Martins (Ludlow, MA/Ludlow) one-timed a pass from senior Jason Sabia (Poughkeepsie/F.D. Roosevelt), who had sent a ball just over the top of the Oneonta defense into the box.
Oneonta added an insurance goal in the 64th minute on a redirect of a cross from the far left flank. Junior
Jordan Flores (Schenectady/Schalmont) sent a crossing pass into the box that sophomore
Nicholas Gregg (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) got his foot on to redirect it by the WNEC keeper.
The Red Dragons finished with a 10-5 advantage in shots and a 9-3 advantage in corners for the contest.
Oneonta will be in action again this coming Tuesday evening when they travel to Troy, N.Y. to take on Rensselaer beginning at 6:30 p.m.
