Sortino was an outstanding multisport athlete in volleyball, basketball and softball during her Oneonta years and, since her graduation, has continued to be a champion for women's athletics as a highly successful administrator and coach at Yale and currently at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Sortino's first coaching job was as an assistant softball coach at Yale from 1971-73 while she was working towards a master's degree from the University of Bridgeport. Since that time she has been at U-Mass, first as the volleyball coach from 1979-1986, and currently as the Associate Athletic Director and head softball coach.
The Yonkers, N.Y. native posted a 218-134-1 record as the volleyball coach at the University, but has become a legend as the softball coach. During her 20 years at the helm of the Minutewomen she has guided her program to over 600 wins and a better than 680 winning percentage. Her teams have won 12 Atlantic-10 titles and made nine trips to the NCAA Tournament reaching the College World Series three times. She currently has a string of nine consecutive 30-plus win seasons at the University and has 13 such seasons overall in her 20 years. She is currently in the top 20 in active coaching wins and winning percentage in NCAA Div. I and is the only New England coach to post over 600 wins.
