It took four days and plenty of rain delays, but the SUNYAC tournament came to a close this afternoon with the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons falling to its rival Cortland Red Dragons 7-4 in the final game. Oneonta (25-14) avoided elimination three times to advance to the championship game, but just came up short.

Oneonta, who was looking to become the first No. 6 seed to win the tournament since the SUNYAC adopted the six-team format in 2001, rallied in the top of the seventh before relief pitcher Sam Van Dorn recorded the final two outs with runners on first and second.

Seniors
Jennifer Brocco (Kingston/Kingston) and
Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) hit back-to-back singles to start the seventh for Oneonta. Brocco was put out on a force keeping runners at first and second for sophomore
Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford). Del Genio roped a double to left center to knock in O'Gorman while moving classmate
Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) to third base. The next batter was senior
Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) who reached on an infield single, which drove in Ruiz. Van Dorn then relieved starter Jamie Lachall and ended the game with a strikeout and a pop out.

Oneonta scored the game's first run in the top of the first when Del Genio singled in O'Gorman, who reached on an error to lead off the game.

Cortland plated two runs in their half of the first and second inning to hold a 4-1 lead heading to the third inning. After a scoreless third inning for both teams, Cortland added a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to increase its advantage to 7-1.

Oneonta scored a single run in the sixth on a solo home run by junior
Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington).

In the first game today, Oneonta pounded Plattsburgh pitching for 16 hits in a 12-7 victory. Ruiz led the onslaught with four hits and three runs. Del Genio, Cuevas, McFall,
Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley) and
Brooke Corbett (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central/Delmar) all collected two hits each. Cuevas' two hits were doubles while Corbett had a triple and Sabatino hit a home run.

Haleigh Agans hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to put Plattsburgh ahead early.

The Red Dragons exploded for five runs in the third inning including a two-run home run by Sabatino. They added a pair of unearned runs in the fourth and then scored three more runs in the fifth to take command of the game.

Senior
Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) picked up her 13
th win of the season in game 1. She pitched the first four innings and then re-entered the game to pitch the seventh inning. She allowed two hits, two earned runs and struck out one batter. Against Cortland, she took the loss going the distance allowing only three earned runs while striking out four.

O'Gorman, Corbett and Del Genio were all named to the All-Tournament Team. Del Genio hit .550 for the tournament with two doubles a home run and five runs batted in. Corbett hit .529 with a double, a triple and one run batted in. O'Gorman hit .429 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and seven runs scored.
